Typhoon first operational sortie with MBDA Brimstone 2

The RAF’s Typhoon Force flew its first operational sortie carrying the new-to-Typhoon MBDA Brimstone 2 precision attack missile on 30 January 2019.

See Justin Reuter's Twitter Feed for a video.

Very nice.

It would be good to carry an asymmetric loadout of 3x PW4 and a single rack of brimstone.

orca 2nd Feb 2019 07:40

Is that inbound or outbound? As in two employed or unable to carry a three pack?

Pontius Navigator 2nd Feb 2019 08:35

It really looks like an exercise in converting a super sleek jet into an A10.

Probably carrying one for air carriage hour reasons.

Multi/Swing role old chap.

Obviously in that case the lessons from the RMP tragedy in AFG have long been removed from corporate memory...

One on either side on the picture shown, same for the PWIVs, also probably for vib/carriage reasons. In this configuration (tanks, pod and air-to-air missiles) the Typhoon can carry 6x Brimstone and 4x PWIV, but outside of a deliberate op the configuration above is more than enough.

57mm 2nd Feb 2019 14:37

What is the store on the starboard outer station?

flighthappens 2nd Feb 2019 14:39

JTO - Where does it put the other two PW4 to take it up to 4?

weemonkey 2nd Feb 2019 14:48

Bit of an OP SEC foofa showing that hardened building in the background too.... might give the Operational Location away too...:E

The Typhoon Common Weapons Launcher shown above with single Brimstones mounted can also be used to carry up to 2x PW4. If you only need to carry a single PW4 on a pylon then no need to carry the common weapons launcher.

There you go. I assume that’s a cleared config within the RTS then...

Cheers.

Thanks RP. Why are there no AMRAAMs on fuselage stations and what is the centre line pod, which seems different from the usual Litening pod?

I'm out of the game now but I'd guess the RTS is changing by the week at the moment plus you have husbandry issues to manage, if operational need allows. Small admin changes on the fit can help the overall capability and cost. For example, if you don't need a full complement of AMRAAM / Meteor on the fuselage stations then the first one to go empty will be the front right station - that way you don't have to account for gun firing vs that individual missile's vib/carriage life.

Viewed from the other side shows a slightly clearer image of the Litening pod in shadow, plus an AIM-120C on the front left fuselage station.

weemonkey,

Except that we have no 'troops in contact" in country and no deployed presence of thousands of ground troops in place. So no chance of a replay of the RMP debacle.

Mate, are you sure? Pretty sure that Launcher only takes 3 Brimstone???

Jackonicko 2nd Feb 2019 18:09

The original triple launcher (as used on Tornado) was just for three Brimstone. That is the new Cobham Common Weapons Launcher, which can also mount a pair of Paveway IVs.

downsizer 2nd Feb 2019 18:13

Happy to be corrected.

Except in Syria where two British special forces were recently badly injured.

And a 'Parachute Regiment' Sgt was killed last Easter, sdaly.

Ogre 3rd Feb 2019 10:13

As a slight tangent, is it me or is the new colour scheme very similar to the old "anti flash white"?

Martin the Martian 3rd Feb 2019 11:32

Same colour scheme, overall camouflage grey. Low visibility roundels and no squadron markings.

BVRAAM 3rd Feb 2019 14:09

Great news, although I am slightly disappointed that so few Brimstones are now being used...... looks like there can't be that many left to kill. ;) Either that or they have all buggered off to Turkey for some down time...
