New British Overseas Bases

On top of the base in Bahrain...

Sunday Telegraph:

”Britain will open two new military bases in the Caribbean and South East Asia as the country looks to step up its military presence overseas after Brexit, Gavin Williamson has revealed........

A source close to Mr Williamson said the new bases could be sited in Singapore or Brunei in the South China Sea, or Montserrat or Guyana in the Caribbean “within the next couple of years”.....

The bases would have service and maintenance staff, supply ships and equipment sites there.......

Yay! The return of overseas postings to nice sunny places! :)

Montserrat please... you know the place where half the island is an exclusion zone due to a big volcano!

Here is Plymouth City, the old capital, which was wrecked with pyroclastic flows and ash in 1997.

So British Guiana (spelling) makes more sense, with it also being good for a bit of equitorial space launch work. :ok:

Looks like an exciting run ashore...not!
Mind you, a base there would have less security problems than most.

Lima Juliet 30th Dec 2018 10:48

Yup, Georgetown in Guyana (part of old British Guiana) looks far more inviting...

Barbados would get my vote.

Fareastdriver 30th Dec 2018 12:26

Guyana has got form. There used to be a RAF flight No 1310, out there in 1965/6.

Where on earth is all the money coming from to pay for this? The treasury normally makes Scrooge look like a profligate spender when it comes to MoD matters so unless it's coming out of the overseas aid budget what's being (further) cut to pay for it?

Asturias56 30th Dec 2018 14:07

Note use of the word "may" in the article

It's another mad publicity puff for Gavin Williamson in his demented campaign to run for Leader of the Tory Party when Mrs May goes

He's currently spewing out a couple a week - remember the British Warship sent to frighten the Russians last week? The Chinese threat to UK telephones this week?? Probably activate the QE against the immigrant hordes by Thursday...........

Worse than Heseltine when he was Defence Secretary and started each week by asking what the schedule was for his photo-ops.....................

chevvron 30th Dec 2018 15:23

Last tine I looked, Guyana wasn't in the Caribbean; it's on the Atlantic; Tobago would make more sense.:ok:
2740m (9000ft) runway, recently upgraded ATC and an ILS installed, regular commuter flights to Piarco (Trinidad), convenient for Venezuala to see what Russian aircraft are visiting.;)

I would argue that Tortola is better placed and it is British.

I think that a little place called Belize might still be available. A lick of paint and a few copters and we will be a world power once again.

ex-fast-jets 30th Dec 2018 16:13

If Belize is re-activated - you'll need Harriers again!

Can we get some out of the boneyard?

I am available to re-train anytime after tomorrow.

The advantage of Singapore is that it built docks specifically to accommodate USN carriers, so the QE and PoW can moor alongside. Georgetown is just starting to build a deep water harbour with jetties to accommodate the largest cruise liners, so an agreement could also see suitable mornings being available there as well.

weemonkey 30th Dec 2018 18:00

I do hope they don't screw up my plans to vacate to St Helena by expanding [ok actually get working] the airport there...

ORAC just who is paying for the work at Georgetown?

Why would Singapore want a UK base? I can’t really see what our Navy could possibly offer them?

UK already has a base in Singapore.

Long read here on the challenges and merits of the argument - https://thinpinstripedline.********....l-britain.html

Don't let appearances fool you - did 6 weeks on det out there in 98. It's a dump.

I suppose it might have changed but I wouldn't go back.
