New British Overseas Bases
On top of the base in Bahrain... Sunday Telegraph: ”Britain will open two new military bases in the Caribbean and South East Asia as the country looks to step up its military presence overseas after Brexit, Gavin Williamson has revealed........ A source close to Mr Williamson said the new bases could be sited in Singapore or Brunei in the South China Sea, or Montserrat or Guyana in the Caribbean “within the next couple of years”..... The bases would have service and maintenance staff, supply ships and equipment sites there....... |

Montserrat please...:cool: you know the place where half the island is an exclusion zone due to a big volcano! Here is Plymouth City, the old capital, which was wrecked with pyroclastic flows and ash in 1997. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....c509fbff33.jpg So British Guiana (spelling) makes more sense, with it also being good for a bit of equitorial space launch work. :ok: |

Where on earth is all the money coming from to pay for this? The treasury normally makes Scrooge look like a profligate spender when it comes to MoD matters so unless it's coming out of the overseas aid budget what's being (further) cut to pay for it?

Last tine I looked, Guyana wasn't in the Caribbean; it's on the Atlantic; Tobago would make more sense.:ok:

The advantage of Singapore is that it built docks specifically to accommodate USN carriers, so the QE and PoW can moor alongside. Georgetown is just starting to build a deep water harbour with jetties to accommodate the largest cruise liners, so an agreement could also see suitable mornings being available there as well. |
I do hope they don't screw up my plans to vacate to St Helena by expanding [ok actually get working] the airport there...
