Short service
Do the RAF or Navy still have short service commissions with a sum of money at the end?

RAF SSCs were originally introduced in the 1930s to produce a reserve of officers (probably all pilots) who would have a reserve commitment and therefore could be brought back when things started to look nasty. I can remember seeing recruiting adverts for SSCs in the 1970s, but perhaps the longer period in training (not to mention holding!) nowadays has made the idea impracticable.

In short yes, but not as you may remember / recognise. We are all now employed on New Employment Model (NEM) Ts&Cs under which I think the majority serve for at least 12 years. I think there are some areas (probably specialist, I’m sure someone can confirm) that serve for shorter periods of 6 years. At the same time the 16/38 pension point has been replaced by a 20/40 point where you get an Early Departure Payment. If you leave at your 12 year point i.e. before hitting the 20/40 EDP mark you still get a resettlement grant and I suspect a preserved pension at state pension age. The cynic in me thinks there is a concerted effort to change the demographics of the Forces such that most people start their working lives in the Forces and quickly move on. Yes it keeps things young and fresh, but it also reduces your pay and pension liabilities significantly over time by folk leaving whilst still junior and befor hitting a pension point. |

The other MAIN reason we are so short of Police being the Tory Party! |
I opened this and thought it was going to be a WIWOL thread..... (with apologies to Mr Black and a few others no doubt)....

4Greens (#1),
Certainly did in 1949. I came in on a SSC (8 yrs active + 4 reserve), with a bonus of £1,500 (good money in those days) at the end of the 8 yrs. D anny. |

PMRAFNS officers had SSCs of between 2 to 4 years exrendable to 8 years but you could apply for a PC at anytime.

Mrs TTN had a 3 year commission in the QARANC starting in 1967 which she had to relinquish when we married in 1969.

Let's clarify that as due to varying reading skills (my own initially...), the nuance of what you said may be missed!
Labour were in Govt 1994-2010 This is how police numbers varied https://fullfact.org/crime/police-numbers/ Police numbers fell slightly between 1994 and 2000 (eyeballing the graph, by about 4000?) but rose substantially between 2000 and 2010. The numbers have now been cut back substantially, below the 2000 minimum with Labour, to late 80s levels. |

Request you check your figures and amend accordingly.
1997-2010. Too much speed reading of Wikepedia and not enough proof reading. |
