Aki Mole about to get a bit busier..?

“Britain would have to spend tens of millions of pounds building a port to service its military base in Cyprus after a no-deal Brexit, officials have concluded. Plans for the facility at RAF Akrotiri are already being drawn up as part of preparations to limit the impact of Britain leaving the EU without a trade agreement. Equipment and other goods headed for the base travel through Cypriot commercial ports. Officials said that customs and other inspections imposed by the EU after a no-deal Brexit would seriously threaten operations.”

Chris, in the village, will be rubbing his hands..

Headline is a bit grandiose - as the article states the full cost will be less than £100m. In terms of maritime dredging and construction costs not so much a new port as a refurbished and larger jetty.

Wouldn’t be a bad strategic military move, either. Especially if it doesn’t come from the defence budget.

The port at Christmas Island (London?) was extended for far less than that, unless of course you counted in the capital cost of all the plant and vehicles dumped therein to construct the breakwaters....

Surely if the goods are only transiting through the EU they can use the TIR Convention, which only requires customs checks at the destination?

chevvron 30th Aug 2018 15:56

More hysterical scaremongering.
Cyprus only joined the EU recently and there were no problems before that so why should there be in future?
Anyway the small port already at Akrotiri could be expanded quite cheaply.

Or use the NATO CPC!

Precisely chevvron. I voted remain myself, but I get a bit tired of tired of scare stories like this from fellow remainers .
