Point of order - there is air, it just gets very thin. In fact the exosphere extends out to about 120,000 miles. No water or land though......

Traditionally in SciFi , space exploration has always been modeled on a Naval style operation - I guess because you're looking at units operating a long way from a base for weeks/months/years and (realtively) large crews - think the Star SHIP "enterprise"

No-one has ever said they'd adopt the famous three traditions of the RN tho'....................................
