President Eisenhower at RAF Benson - August 1959

Pretty unique photos taken by me at Benson in August 1959 as I don't recall any other US President travelling by RAF aircraft.

warmtoast,
nice pic of the Hastings after a para drop. Brought back memories of long days at PTS. In case anyone is wondering we always landed with the para doors stowed after such trips as they were a pig to refit and it was quite easy to lose one. And if you think that was dodgy look at this pic of a Hastings landing after a 'roller conveyor' sortie. The pic is not one of mine so apologies https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.gmf...8a1b9c6367.jpg
if I have infringed any ones copyright.

I was on 390 MU Seletar early '66 to mid '68 and the block I lived in overlooked the slipway - presumably the block in the background of your photo.
Below is a scan from one of my few surviving slides - 34 Sqn Beverlys. Flew in one of them up to Kuching - a very leisurely process!https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.gmf...46facba408.jpg

I was taught by an `old` Hastings captain at AAEE,whilst doing a bit of freelance co-piloting ,at about the height shown in #161,you squeeze the brakes on then off, the pressure dissipates slowly causing a bit of wheel drag, and helps to `nail` the wheels, preventing`hop.skipping and jumping` down the runway....Same on the Valetta...

Shades of an "in" technique to put a 727 down close to a greaser. At the last moment pole forward slightly.

(Love the Sunderland pics. But not the ones from the scrapbook. Some of Walrii would be nice.)

Fantome - anyone going to tell Ryanair.....

Fantome 21st Jun 2018 17:13

Does Ryanair damage pavements? The trick with the 3-holer was perfected by a former Bomber Command pilot who came home after the war and joined Ansett. (When he said his call-sign it sounded like he was saying "Romeo My Gecko".)
