Provisional Typhoon sales to Saudi Arabia

"The final terms of which will now be negotiated - is a long-awaited follow-on order for Typhoons after BAE sold 72 of the jets to the Saudi air force in 2007."

The final price of this deal was only agreed in 2014 after years of wrangling.
that was presumably about the size of the bribe required.........

I would imagine the scrutiny of this deal may run a little deep after the previous inquiry

Well done to all concerned.

Which only reveals your ignorance of what actually takes place.

So you didn't see the series on Saudi recently screened in UK that highlighted all the nefarious backhanders involved to get military contracts in Saudi?

Not at all connected...

If that was completely true the Saudi Air Force would be equipped with Chengdu J10s.

It was aired on the BBC fairly recently and called - The House of Saud.

It was quite explicit in its detailing of the corruption involved in getting contracts is Saudi Arabia.

It also showed how Mohammed bin Salman had addressed the problem by rounding up members of the Royal family and other ruling elite and imprisioning them in a luxury hotel until they gave him millions of dollars.

The jury is out on whether this was a simple power-grab or a real move to bring the country into the 21st century.

Now he is in UK schmoozing Theresa........

It's just an upmarket version of a company taking a potential customer out for lunch.

Maybe I am guilty of bribery and corruption. When I renewed my contracts with a Chinese company I took those that matter out for a gala dinner.

It would smooth over so many potential bumps on the way to new arrangements.

Well said.
The choice is perfectly simple. We either pretend to be whiter than white and let someone else sell their jets or we back our industry and make the sale.
The AY 1 contact was government to government with oil as the currency.
Many have tried to prevent further arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the only people who would have benefited would have been the French or Americans.
Remember Tony Blair was strong enough to stand against a further inquiry quite rightly saying that it was against the national interest. Well done to him and all involved in this likely sale.

Getting precious over what the Saudis might or might not be doing with British kit in Yemen after what we've been doing in Iraq and Afghanistan for the last 15 years or so is either hilarious or tragic, I'm not sure which.

Hear hear! And why is all the focus on SA and little or none on Iran, who, after all, are the regional power backing the insurgency that lead to the conflict in the first place?

KiloB - trying to sort out how started the fighting in Yemen is a thankless job - it's been going on for years

It's only when outsiders make the mistake of getting involved that the outside world bothers to try and allocate blame

Is the UK bribing them to introduce democracy?
