A-10 fleet to receive more new wings...

In what could be considered a positive move towards postponing the A-10's complete retirement for some time to come, the USAF is to order more new build wing sets...

Also, Rep Martha McSally (R-AZ) - former A-10 sqn cdr - is now running for the Senate with "save the A-10" as part of her manifesto.

Aah, biplane A 10s

What do I know?

I just believe that A-10 is a great warfighting asset, with nothing comparable in the inventory at the price.

Sounds good to me.

Go get 'em .... I can't find a quick reference to her call sign. Anyone fly with her remember her call sign? (I forget if the Air Force calls the nickname "call sign" or something else ... like that 'Maverick' nickname or 'Iceman' or 'Goose' that people may remember from Top Gun, and that is consistent with Navy pilot call signs ....)

Off topic - but best call-sign I've ever heard was the female Viper driver known simply as Rock.
Red Haired Ovulating Commie Killer.

Probably the best COIN aircraft on the planet.

Thank Dog someone has had an attack of commonsense (albeit forced upon them).

Go Thunderbolt !! :ok:

I knew a USAF major, female, A-10 pilot, whose call sign was Rags. I never asked her where that came from.
Once met an F-4 RIO whose call sign was Vahmit. (Or Vomit?)

McSally's callsign: she had to have one. What was it?
Burqa? :E

Marine F-18 pilot back in the early 90s, last name Mamarella, call sign “tits”.

Surprising that the engines are not upgraded with the wing refit.
The A-10 could use it.

Educated guess here, but I suspect it's because the new wings are required to keep it airworthy - the engines can be overhauled indefinitely.
Also, unless there is an 'off the shelf' replacement available (I honestly don't know), a new engine is a massive development expense.
PS, what do you feel is the issue with the engines - I've never heard that the A10 was considered to be underpowered.

There have been several proposals offered, drawing on GE's development of the CF34 family since the TF34 was first bench tested 49 years ago, but funding never follows. The TF34-GE-101 (ex -100B) for example would insert tech from the CF34-8 (incl. FADEC), offering improvements in power, hot/high performance, responsiveness and durability.

The Air Force looked closely at a re-engining program in 2001 (15 or so years after the TF34-GE-100A Hot Section Life Improvement), but the study ended up unfunded. Boeing took another look in 2015, when it was considering re-marketing A-10s abroad, but again nothing came of it.
