LAST FLIGHT OF THE LYNX
 
Tuesday 16th Jan sees the final flight of the Lynx, about time or was it a good aircraft. I have heard differing views on the Wildcat.

From my point of view (2.5 years Mk1 and briefly Mk7) - about time. Mk1 was a nasty under-powered device with a tail-rotor that went the rwong way, a hyd system that couldn't handle a hot day around the Hockey Stick and the very worst feature of the Wessex - the accessory drive - that should've been thrown out of the drawing office. You would've thought Wastelands had learnt a lesson from the Gnome Wessie about installing turbine engines at an angle, too...

Mk7 was introduced into service by the same 'team' that was responsible for the Chinook Mk2 MLU - the writing was on the wall (no ODM, ACM or even FRCs on entry into service for starters).

I take my hat off to the Army operators who took this bag of effluent and managed to get it airborne and (occasionally) make it work. They succeeded despite the aircraft, not because of it. Good effort, AAC and REME.

...pleased to see that the route(s) include Oakington. Give the tower a wave from Thud, will you please? Happy days.

Good, if draughty camper, room in the back for two beds and caggage, but only if you throw the six-man seat out. Pushed, pulled, fuelled and flew the 1, 7 and brought the 9 into service, especially enjoyed the 1(GT).

Fun to fly, until it crashed and burned with its totally non-crashworthy fuel system that claimed far too many good people through its undistinguished service.

The wildcat looks a bit like changing your name to Leonardo. Same aircraft, new name.
Disagree on Lynx being a bad aircraft, it did the job for many many years. I was always glad to see Lynx 5 and 7 looking after me....::

Always happy to see a Lynx turn up in NI when others in the shape of a Wessex, Puma or Chinook were too scared, lazy, it was too close to the bar opening time, or there was a cloud within 500nm, to bother.

Yeah, right! Can't quite remember just how many hundreds of hours I spent driving Puma 6 about at LL in S Armagh with said Lynx above 2k as top cover!! Or how about the 252 internal aids approaches we flew to get the job done!

Or was it Puma 2/3? So long ago, but such happy days!

Yawn!!! Not just untrue but pretty rude and inflammatory. Not the experience I had in the 4 years I spent there.

I don't know where you got that idea. The pre publicity might have said a five-ship, but four were crewed, four started and four flew (all the way around), led by the special scheme...

The formation comment made me laugh. It did look like a row of stragglers to be honest!
But - why did they bother? How much did that cost and how much time was wasted preparing for it.
The public couldn't give two hoots about final flyby's could they?

There were 30-40 press at Odiham and people outside, the carpark at Middle Wallop was full at 0900, people all round the circuit were asking about timings on Twitter, I know people went to Duxford for it, and in London there were people who went up both the Shard and the Walkie Talkie to see these "flyby's" (sic), and no, they weren't all "spotters". In some quite high winds they made it around a big circuit, arriving on time in London and landing at Odiham in a hailstorm, so I would hardly call it shabby or uneccessary.
