Another truly sad loss.

Charlie Duke - 'I found out from the Flight surgeon later on that my heart beat was 144 at lift off, his (John Young) was 70'

John Young - 'Yeah, I told him mine was too old to go any faster'

Very sad news.

Only five moon walkers left now...

So sad. When I was born, there was no one alive who'd walked on another world. That will likely also be the case when I die.
Some pretty cool space travel will have occurred in between - to bad we could keep it up.

Many of his peers when asked who they would choose to fly with, picked John.
He was the real deal. Smuggled a corn beef sandwich aboard the Gemini 3 space mission in 1965
Must have been a privilege to have as a friend and colleague.
A sad day and a great loss.

Had a privilege to meet him several times in 90's at JSC. Great man, R.I.P.

I remember when he was the only astronaut to have made 4 space-flights. What a hero!

Hate to quibble given the context but for accuracies sake surely Jim Lovell beat Young to that honour by about two years or so..?

( in Lovell's case, Geminis 7 and 12, Apollo 8 and made it to four flights with the infamous 13 in Spring 1970... Young got to four flights with Apollo 16 in spring 72)

For an excellent account of Young’s role in early Shuttle development and flying I recommend “Into the black” by Rowland White (Vulcan607). It includes an account of Young insisting on paying a fellow astronaut back for a lunch tab just before the first launch. “You don’t fly these things when you’ve got debts...all my debts are paid”
