Question for my Elders, please.

I had a good old mate (RIP) whose RAF career included being a WOp/AG on No. 5 Sqn's Wapitis over the Northwest Frontier pre-WW2, and had the medal ribbon to prove it. So, how would HE have been badged?

He ended up as a sqn ldr Arm Eng at MoD as the deskie responsible for ALL rifled weapons in the RAF, from the 76.2mm Scorpion light tank gun, through the Tornado 23mm Mauser, to .22 rifles for Cadets. Not a bad career, starting off waving his .303 Lewis Gun at the natives from his biplane!

harrym (#20),

Think I got a week's Disembarkation Leave when I came back from the States, and I seem to remember some time in the "Majestic" Hotel in Harrogate (transit camp), but that was all.

Warmtoast,

Bit late, but congrats on your lovely pics earlier. Wish I could do as well. But old dogs and new tricks don't mix !

Cheers both, Danny.

From 1923, Air Gunners were awarded the "Flying Bullet" badge which was worn on the sleeve - it was replaced by the AG brevet in 1940. The WOp/AG added the wireless badge.

Thanks for that, guys. The bullet badge now resonates! I bet he wore a Sidcot suit in that rear cockpit!

He scratch-built a beautiful section of the Wapiti rear cockpit, with fully swivelling Scarff ring, in about 1/12 scale. Lovely bloke ...

... and I dated his eldest daughter fir a year or so too, having been propositioned by her through her father!!
