Cracking photo, Grommet!

Does anyone know the provenance of this photo - location etc? What does the white X in the black box signify? Is that a closed taxiway?

The 'X' is the photographer kissing his arse goodbye.

If you look in the plume you will see a runway marker board with a number. I would guess an X on the other side with the visible X box having a number too.

In other words distance to go is not exactly X thousands in the X direction

Genuine photo (despite many arguing differently...), it's an Italian AF Tornado ECR, apparently on the strength of the RSV (Reparto Sperimentale Volo) at the time, the location is (possibly) Cameri and the date is December 2008...

There are also stories of a Vulcan scoring a groove with its wingtip in a US desert during an exercise, and also one damaging a power line with the tail fin having flown up under it.

'Twas indeed (a practice for) the Yeovilton Air Day, and he removed the nav light too. Which was duly mounted on a polished wood plinth and presented to the pilot at the post-show Dinner IIRC..........
