One mag has an impulse coupling which delays the ignition timing at cranking RPM.
Only part of the thing it does, it also flings the mag over rapidly when it releases thus ensuring a fat spark.

Yup, I tell my studes that but forgot to mention it here

I have the Chipmunk, T67 and Bulldog RAF manuals, are they not restricted, or does that at some stage expire?

If you were concerned about document security, you would have returned your old manuals to SPFS instead of hanging on to them, no? :=

what's wrong with the technique in this picture?:
Tch! I'm surprised nobody has mentioned: fingers over the back of the blade, inappropriate (lack of) footwear, no chocks ... were you distracted? :E

I can most certainly find you an original copy of the Bulldog ACM and FRCs from our archive at Boscombe Down (scanned to PDF). I also have my own copy of the, then, Old Sarum flying club POH in Word or PDF.

Further to Easy Street's post, I believe most aircraft manuals become unclassified when they go out of service. Certainly if the aircraft was only used for training rather than a front-line type.

Re #18,
The prop blade that is swung should be towards the lower point in its path as compression is reached so that, the prop swinger steps away from the prop as they swing through compression, whether the engine fires, or not. :)

Some of us have replaced the old Bendix mags with Slick. They don't have an impulse mag, so both should be on. Moreover, we also have replaced the old starter motor with a modern Sky-Tec which spins the engine very much faster so spat can occur earlier.
