Flt Lt Peter Roy Cushnan RAF

Good morning all,

I am currently undertaking a project on behalf of the Station Heritage Centre at RAF Akrotiri. The project involves compiling a list of servicemen and women who lost their lives whilst serving on the Island. Once compiled, the list will be turned into a wall of and book of remembrance, both of which will be put on display in the new Station Heritage Centre.

So far, one of the names that has come up is that of a Flt Lt Peter Roy Cushnan who I believe may have been an ex-70 Squadron C-130 pilot. Did anyone know Roy? If so, I would be most grateful if they could drop me a PM.

Also, if you know of anyone else that lost their lives out in Cyprus, I would be very interested in speaking to you. Any information received will go a long way in helping to build and expand on their story.

To give you an idea of where I am to date, I have a list of 362 names who have died on Island. The first being in 1941 and the last in 2010. The list I have is by no means complete and I’m finding out new information every day. Some of these died in road traffic accidents, others in aviation accidents and then everything else in between.

Many thanks in advance.

Martin

Pete Cushnahan was a co on LXX San when I was there. He was on holiday in Cyprus with his wife and 2 friends and died suddenly, can't remember if it was a stroke or heart attack. Great guy, larger than life and always at the centre of things. Hope this helps.

Regards

I am pretty sure Pete had a heart attack whilst swimming with his family on holiday in Cyprus. Pete was a great bloke, smoked a fair but then we all did in those days. A very sad and traumatic time for his family and squadron friends of which Pete had a lot of. Sarah I think plays golf at Wootton Bassett 4 miles finals for R26 at EGDL.

We can't PM you due to you being a new member with only on post. So would it be possible for you to provide a website address or email address we could send information to rather than turning this into a long thread with a list of names and information that you may already have?

Pete was a Sgt Siggy on 42 Sqn for a number of years where he was a Lead Wet Operator on Nimrods, before taking his commission and moving on to Hercs. Great guy and a sad loss.

Pete suffered a heart attack whilst on holiday in Cyprus at the young age of about 34; by then, he was a skipper on 30 Sqn (from memory), having served on LXX as a co, and with the Belgian Air Force on exchange. I had the priviledge of carrying him on his final journey, having served with him on LXX in the mid-80s. He was indeed on Nimrods in an earlier existance, and a great bloke in every respect.

I have info on an RAF PFO who died in a sport parachuting accident at Akrotiri in 1971. If you don't already have this one I can send the info by email if you can provide an address.

I did not know Pete personally (nodding terms, one might say) but I was good friends with a guy who was on his AEOp course (would have been about 60 course (ish) 74-75). I know he was a very popular guy whose young and tragic death was a great shock. RIP.

Knew Pete and Sarah when they were in Brussels whilst he was on exchange with the Belgian AF. He was a great guy.

Thank you to all that have taken the time to reply.

As well as finding out about Peter, I have also had some good information on another chap who sadly died in a parachuting accident in Cyprus.

Thanks again to you all.
