New Year's Honours 2017

Of interest to some and with congratulations to those deserving:

New Year's Honours 2017

At link you should find the big awards (Knighthoods, MBEs etc). Perhaps someone could post the Military Awards (Commendations etc)?

Brilliant Al - has there been a 3 star rockape before? Certainly wasn't anyone above AVM in my time.

By the way, I've made something of myself - it's just that nobody has told HM! ;)

:ok:

They would have done, she probably just wasn't listening.

At the risk, no the certainty of sounding miserable and mean I just cant stand the New Year Honours list. The awards have become somewhat discredited by some of the very people who receive them.
Does the USA and Germany have an honours system like ours, or any?
Its just another continuation of our class system writ large. Senior Officers only always get the OBEs in the RN, CBEs for lesser officers and Senior Ratings, BEMs for the remaining. Its just the same old **** pecking order.
I'm getting to the stage in life where I look up to people more who knock the award back when they are sounded out for it when asked -celebs like rocker David Bowie and pert chef Nigella Lawson ffs.
With only about seven comments for the people who have received these awards, I bet deep down I'm not the only one who thinks this.
Strictly my own opinion, and a Happy New Year as well.

^^

You are not alone, but I think, like republicanism, atheism and such like, you are going to get nothing but flack on a military forum, so why bother?

Happy New Year!

I'm with Hangarshuffle - these "honours" come up with the rations

Ahhh commendations lol, in the real world, not worth the paper they are printed on, if indeed they are.

As for the rest, and I include so call sportsmen, simply giving out awards such as OBE's, MBE's and knighthoods etc to people for simply doing their jobs and getting well paid for it, just degrades the system.
Now if they had done something exceptional I could understand it, but i would rather see the likes of an OBE awarded to the old woman who has spent 30 plus years of her life, paid peanuts, looking after disabled children etc than to someone who has simply been promoted into a highly paid and pensioned job.
It's about time they scrubbed the lot.

The media usually seek out some of these ordinary people, and there were a couple of them on BBC Breakfast yesterday who received awards for working within their communities, and they were absolutely delighted. My mother-in-law was awarded an MBE a few years back for the years -no, decades- of work she had done within the charity sector in her home town, and she is still tickled pink whenever any of her family mention it.

I suspect that those who belittle the awards system are usually those who have never done anything, or are never likely to, that would ever see them nominated for one. Except for those who turn awards down and rant about them being an imperialist throwback, which is a kick in the teeth to those who nominated them.

I don't expect I'll ever be in the position to be nominated, but if I was I'd be over the moon.

Absolutely! Wasn't there some meeja woman in this recent list who turned down an OBE cos "we don't have an Empire any more"!:ugh:

So no more GCs or VCs then, as we no longer have a King Geo or a Queen Vic (except in Albert Square.......)

Whilst agreeing with your general point, you are a bit adrift in your grasp of the honours system. The CBE is a higher award than the OBE, and would generally be awarded to Commodores/Captains RN and equivalent. OBEs would tend to go to Commanders and Lieutenant commanders and equivalent while MBEs, which you omit from your list, possibly confusing them with the BEM, go to junior officers, WOs and ORs. The BEM, which used to be awarded to OR's is now awarded quite sparingly, mainly to civilians for charity work.

A sign of the times.

This is the first year that I don't recognise anyone's name on the RAF Honours List.
All my compatriates, even those who made it to the top echelons of rank, seem to have retired!
Some would say time I did, too!

Not me Shy, I have a pension needs servicing!

Happy new year.

Nice to see that an ex-OC 611 VGS has been awarded an AOC 22 (Training) Group Commendation. IIRC a member for 50 years plus, starting as a Staff Cadet...

Thanks and the same to yourself, CG....But you retired from the RAF years ago, as I did.

Then you later "temporarily" retired from your latter employment, I understood.
