Chinese Female Pilot Dies

The Times: Pioneer female fighter pilot is killed in crash

One of China’s first female fighter pilots died on Saturday when her stealth jet plunged to the ground during a training run. Yu Xu, 30, ejected but died after hitting the wing of another plane. Her male co-pilot suffered light injuries. Yu was in the August 1st aerobatic team, akin to the Red Arrows, and dubbed the Golden Peacock for her good looks and skill at a peacock-imitating dance.

That is very sad. May the lady rest in peace.

ShyTorque 14th Nov 2016 09:09

Tragic, extremely bad luck.

jolihokistix 14th Nov 2016 09:14

Agreed, so sad.

J-10. Was that one of these new stealth jets?

....skill at a peacock-imitating dance....

Clearly a Fan Dance ! (another subject needs to be included in the flying training syllabus for WRAF entrants ?)

As you say, RIP, condolencies to her family.

Fly J-10s, normally fly a formation of 6 - and include a majority of female pilots

Second crew member seems OK, walking wounded.

Very Sad

It is so tragic her life ended this way.

“...According to mainland media reports, Yu’s plane plunged to the ground after an unspecified accident, and she was unable to eject in time.... The reports said Yu was flying with a male pilot, who was able to eject but was injured....”

RIP to a great aviator.

The aircraft must have gone in at high speed looking at the size of the crater. It reminds me of the size of the crater when a pair of F3s had a mid-air near Sleaford in the mid 90s. I wonder if it was a mid air if the reports of her hitting another aircraft's wing are correct? The crater can be seen in this clip - I don't speak Cantonese, if anyone else can interpret?

It's in Mandarin, actually, but it's too fast for me.

Lima Juliet 15th Nov 2016 16:15

I don't speak Mandarin either! :ok:

Lonewolf_50 15th Nov 2016 17:51

I am not sure how many Chinese pilots frequent our forums, so I'll speak up here.

It's 2016, friends, and there are lady fighter pilots aplenty nowadays. Let's treat our ladies as members of "the brotherhood" (even though we may need a new term since it isn't just men doing this anymore). Yu Xu died doing something she loved, as have a great many of our comrades in arms over the years. She's part of the select club of military aviators, and the even more select club of fast jet military aviators. Whatever the country of origin, she is (was) one of us: at least in spirit.

RIP, Yu Xu, and may your next flight be with the angels.

EDIT: As the posts that got me to raise an eyebrow have been removed, this post is edited to remove my appeal for a second look.

Well said, Sir.

Barksdale Boy 16th Nov 2016 00:56

The commentary refers to the crater as being particularly large and goes on to praise the sacrifice she made and the sacrifices that others have made and will be called on to make in the future.

Darwinism 16th Nov 2016 02:19

Well said Lonewolf 50. I'm tired of the misogynist tirades that appear far to often on this site, justified by their authors as 'banter'.

KenV 16th Nov 2016 13:26

Yu Xu, 30, ejected but died after hitting the wing of another plane.
That seems extremely unlikely. More likely is that the wing hit her. Kinda like a bird or hail strike. The bird/hail did not hit the airplane. The airplane hit the bird/hail.

As for Kara "Revlon" Hultgreen, let's not revisit that travesty/tragedy.

KenV: I edited that out now that the posts which got me to speak up were removed. (It was about a year after I left San Diego that the accident happened. The laws of aerodynamics and gravity don't discriminate based on gender).

I had no problem with your post and thought it was well stated. I just wanted to prevent a potentially nasty side thread.
