Holiday in a Sea King?

Well, it's different, I'll give it that...

Sea King helicopter transformed into glamping pod - BBC News

Sook 28th Oct 2016 06:55

This was on George Clarke's Amazing Spaces on CH4 last night if anyone wants to see more of the build.

Sandy Parts 28th Oct 2016 07:48

amazed no 'Fly Navy' type museum bought it given the amount of kit it still contained (observer / acoustics stations, dipping transponder, flight deck panels etc)

ShyTorque 28th Oct 2016 08:03

A great idea. Good to see it preserved (even though it was a Navy one :p ).

ORAC 28th Oct 2016 08:35

Does it have a ceiling fan?° And if it's Navy, surely it's a cabin, not a pod......

campbeex 28th Oct 2016 08:44

Pod or cabin?

And "mini galley" instead of "mini kitchen", "en suite heads" instead of "en suite bathroom" etc...

Tashengurt 28th Oct 2016 11:34

There's half a dozen or so in a field in Co Durham apparently awaiting the same treatment.
They look much less complete though, wouldn't be surprised if they sit around rusting for a few years then quietly get scrapped.

Splash1983 28th Oct 2016 13:37

Slightly sad and ageing when you look at the airframe number and know it is your logbook! Nice cabin though.

Now imagine what it's like to see all the Pumas still flying around that you put in your logbook in the 80s!

Tashengurt - they dont rust?;)

So he spent £7000 in the auction to acquire it, £7000 to transport it to his garden, £26000 to do it up! £40k for a shed!

Wants £150/night to stay in it. Mind he did a good job overall. Fair play.

Wander00 31st Oct 2016 17:42

Clearly we are undercharging for our gites in France!

bgbazz 31st Oct 2016 18:11

7000 quid to transport it? Someone had a serious lend of him!!

Much more upscale glamping in the USA with a former USCG S-61 in a cottage "hangar" - up to $899 per night:

I have been retired over 20 years, but worked on Sea King equipment years before I retired.
They must be fit for nothing more than ground exhibition.
have you see what salt spay can do to Aluminum air-frames.

The 1965 Boeing was transported from a plane graveyard in San Jose to the Costa Rican jungle, and nestled on a 50-foot pedestal. The luxurious hotel is full with hand-carved Indonesian teak furniture and two air-conditioned bedrooms, an ocean-view terrace and some wild neighbours like sloths and monkeys.....
