Great find, WC, loved it!

(I had the privilege of serving under Pappy's grand nephew, Ed, when he was a rear admiral).

A New Zealand Corsair squadron operated in the Solomons in WW2. I believe one is still airworthy but is a "birdcage" model?

The one I saw certainly wasn't a birdcage model. Google NZ5648.

Tim Wallis had a birdcage Corsair flying at Wanaka in the 1990s, though not an ex RNZAF example; it's now with a museum in Brazil. There are a couple of ex RNZAF F4U-1 hulks, last heard of with Ross Jowitt at Ardmore, possibly now in the US.

Nofly, "birdcage" refers to the early Corsair canopy, that had numerous cross braces, thus looked like a birdcage- later versions had blown canopies.

The hood had a fair bit of framework on early Corsairs, later aircraft had a blown hood.

Thank you "West Coast" for this interesting and detailed information. It was an effective machine and had its place along with the P51D.
