Having had the misfortune to tune in to hear "Baroness" Jowell spouting off about our Olympic successes. Am I alone in thinking that the appointment of the "Noble Baroness" is one iota more worthy of the honour, than any of our troops who put their little pink bods on the line every day..

Or for that matter, any of the other political rabble who are content to vote to send guys into harms way, and then sit back and wait for their elevation and compensation.

Oh to see ordinary representatives from all branches of the military dressed in ermine and appropriately compensated, and I don't mean the career administrators and bean counters who penny pinched their way up the greasy pole.

I refer to ordinary pilots, nav's, rear crew, lineys, etc who have not necessarily been selected on a "list", but who do "business as usual", well.

I think what is intrinsically wrong is tying honour to rank. It was a leap forward honouring ORs with MBE or DFC/AFC but beyond that you must be wg cdr to be considered for an OBE.

Perhaps sporting honours should also be tied to age and retirement. How do you honour a KCBE if they continue to gain medals?

Ah, PN, but OBE is for Other's bloody efforts. Sqn Ldrs may not have enough 'others' to have that option.

It's the system, get over it. I think we will find the Olympic medallists, especially those who won Gold, suitable acknowledged in the NYHL, along with nurses bus drivers and lollipop persons, oh, and some politicians too.

I rely on my "Guide to Grammar" which among other things includes:

Seriously, it's this "Baroness" thing - ordinary "doers" don't get to be Barons or Baronesses, occasionally, the master race become Knights or Ladies but only after they have served their useful purpose. :E

I guess I have just about had it with the politico's who in the vast majority have never served any useful purpose (2 Jags comes to mind). "Punishment of the innocent" and the "reward of the non-participants". Mind you, twas ever thus.

For me Military Medals are a completely different animal and are generally awarded on merit whereas "Honours" are often handed out to cronies, donors, and dubious TV and pop personalities. Is there a donor price list to get a suitable seat in the HOL.?..I think we should know.

Have the Olympic team not already been adequately recompensed by the public purse and in many cases corporate sponsorship?

There is a nice little link to an Independent article doing the rounds on FB that shows how each country rewards its Olympic Gold medal winners - all in thousands of dollars ranging from 10,000 up to 750,000 - in the UK, it is a big fat zero!

The £400 million from the lottery that funded team GB for Rio works out at between £1 and £2 per year for each person in the UK over the 4 year workup - pretty good value really since one lottery ticket is £2.

Ahhh, we digress, lottery funding (Voluntary taxation with limited benefit) is another animal and certainly fulfils a need to plug holes where the treasury knows it will.

I welcome the contribution made to our athletes to get them to the Olympics but I do not see it as an "honour" since the public have chosen to sponsor through buying lottery tickets.

As I said at the start of the thread, my issue is with the fat cat polies who have "honours" elevated on them, and our young men and ladies with little pink bodies who pick up the tab for the polies vanity and who mostly receive zilch.

Sometimes the recognition and reward take long to get, if you haven't passed in the meantime and have the relatives receive it posthumously.
