Russian helicopter shoot down - Ukraine

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUlaGXDeSik

Cheeky little engagement. I have forgotten how disconcerting it is to fly LL with a low lying sun in your face.

The probe in the camera view looks like something usually fitted to a Test aircraft. I have googled a number of russian aircraft and cannot see anything similar...other than the Mi28. One that aircraft it looks to be slaved to the gun, possibly for gunnery adjustments at the point of the barrel. Seems strange to have it stowed forward if they are low level over a threat area.....thoughts?

Cheers

Ralph

The video is from a Ukrainian Mi-24 Hind shoot down.

The video in this post was allegedly filmed on Aug. 20, 2014, somewhere near Lugansk where a Ukrainian Mi-24 Hind gunship helicopter was hit and shot down by an anti-aircraft missile while on patrol with another helicopter of the same type.

Both crew members, reportedly Major Oleg Biryukov and Captain Anton Rodionov, died in the crash.

Topic starter, please update your knowledge of geography and aviation in that region.
"Russian helicopter shoot down" (in Ukraine) is incorrect and sounds provocative. Mi-24 that are used in Ukraine is a heritage of Soviet Union. Meaning that manufacturing of various components of all aircraft at that time was distributed across many republics of SU (including Ukraine itself).
Thus it is an "old Soviet helicopter shoot down in Ukraine" (by Ukrainians).

Two crew members died in that crash apparently.

I'll let you guess my thoughts. :=

Yup, pretty unsavoury

OP or Mods, please delete this thread

Yes, delete this. We want only nice threads. Can't believe somebody put up a thread on the military side involving nasty military icky stuff.

Coochycool 22nd Jul 2016 11:28

Of what merit is it?

I learn nothing from this

Wageslave 22nd Jul 2016 11:37

Heavens, it would never do to be confronted with reality, would it?

Lets just add lots of inappropriate, mawkish RIPs and blue sikieses and fake condolences to everyone and we'll all feel better I'm sure.

Else just man up.

Although some baulk at the posting of this video I find it interesting to see how vulnerable and quickly downed tough helicopters can be.
My respects to the crew who knew fully the risks of flying in a war zone but mounted a camera to record their adventures anyway and, as this wasn't a gun camera, most likely to show to their families what they did at work.

Not even time for a "WTF?". :(

Well fool you. As someone who used to do this stuff in a previous life, it taught me something if I were to ever partake again. Never had to worry about missiles in my day.
