Hi guys. Was considering going to Bruntingthorpe end of this month for Cold War Jets day, for the first time, and was wondering how it works. Does each jet do one taxi and take off run and then thats it, or do they do multiple runs ? Do you need to get there early to get a good flight line place ?

Nobody on this thread thats been to Bruntingthorpe can give me answer ? I just want to plan my video and photo taking opportunities of the aircraft and need to know if I have only one chance, or more, for each take-off run. Thanks.

So I've not been a regular for a number of years, but I would assume:

It's been a while since I was last involved, but I'm sure that after start each type taxied up and down the first part of the runway (ie abeam the spectators) prior to lining up and doing a 'take-off' run. Following the aborted high-speed run the aircraft was taxied back past the crowd to the ORP on the far side of the runway.

I'm not sure now whether some of larger aircraft are parked elsewhere prior to their run. I'm sure we did two similar sessions per aircraft type throughout the day.

The mini jets tend to taxi around a little before their high speed runs. The larger stuff tends to be positioned to go either first in the show from the runway or from the far side "ORP" and are obviously more limited in manoeuvrability.

The VC10 is obviously the most limited and will tend to go first (pre-positioned on the runway) or last on the day. It will do a single run and then be positioned either on a pan in the spectator area, or if last will taxi up to the crowd to allow access.

Thanks for the replies guys. Its the one airshow I,ve never been to, but discovered it recently online, and thought I'd like to go there. The website doesn't really give much detail. Being that I enjoy taking photos, and a bit of video, my thought was if I take some shots during one run, I can do some video during the next run of the same aircraft. If there is only one run per aircraft, and there are not so many aircraft, then what is happening the rest of the time ? It would be over very quickly. Is it safe to assume that there will be runs of Comet, VC10, Lightning, Bucceneers, Nimrod, Victor ?
"Front row gets busy", do you recommend being there at 9.00 to guarantee a place ?

The rest of the time will be positioning of aircraft, starting up, shutting down etc, which is generally all done at "crowd centre" purely due to the space limitations of the site. The smaller aircraft are parked in the crowd area to allow public viewing so have to be towed out onto the runway before anything can happen.:)

Of those running the ones you mention are probably safe to assume, although the Comet has only just starting running again after a few years off.

Following the recent discussion, I just wanted to add that I went to Bruntingthorpe on Sunday, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was amazing, and will be on my permanent list from now on. My earlier quieries have now been self answered. From the exellent opportunity to get up close to the aircraft before the taxying event, to the noise (!) and exitement of the start-ups and taxy runs, to the post show getting close to aircraft and being able to chat to the crews. To their credit, the crews hung about afterwards, and chatted at leisure to people, showed kids into aircraft, and posed for photos, they were great. Not everthing runs to plan though, and the gremlins are plentiful. The Comet had a hydraulics failure the day before and the nose gear wasn't working so wasn't displayed, not even to veiw statically, the Nimrod limped to the start line then limped away, apparently also with a hydraulic failure so no brakes working, only emergency braking the Delphin jet taxied to the start line but abandoned his attempt after his nose wheel jammed, and was towed away, one of the two hunters, the twin seater, started his run then immediately fizzled out as it was obvious he had engine problems. Apart from that, everything else ran smoothly ! Overall, a great day out, and well done to everyone that makes it happen. I look forward to August's event. Here's a scene from yesterday:

Does the museum let the public look inside the Nimrod on regular Sunday openings?

I worked for many years on various bits and bobs at attached to V bombers, Canberra s, and others, never as far a I knew had anything fall off. could have been big bang if some of them had. visited many RAF and RN-AS stations.

Just a little heads-up concerning the forthcoming August Cold War Jets at Bruntingthorpe day, as I was looking forward to going again, its been cancelled ! Yep, cancelled. Obviously other commercial interests have prevailed. Highly dissapointed.
