I was on 543 Valiants in the early sixties and we flew (relatively) regularly over the Kola Peninsular albeit at c50,000 ft/Mach 0.75 doing exactly the same sort of thing.

I can't believe that the CIA Head at Inserlik chose to order Garry Powers to fly on a route which ran very close to Moscow on "May Day" and even ignored Sqd Ldr Robbie Robinson's concerns. When powers failed to recover to Bono, I'll bet there was much "egg on face"!!

Didn't one of the SR pilots say something like, "You ain't been lost until you've been lost at mach 3." Or similar!
