Red Arrows will not display Suffolk Show 2016
The Red Arrows have announced that they will not display at The Suffolk Show,Trinity Park near Ipswich this Summer. Safety factors quoted include the proximity of built-up areas and the location of major junctions on two busy roads nearby: viz A12 and A14.

the proximity of built-up areas and the location of major junctions on two busy roads nearby |
Yes that will make the Farnborough Air Show impossible. It will be very difficult to observe/monitor the major roads around Farnborough and Aldershot M3 etc.,from the airfield, without many observers off site.
Unless of course there is one CAA rule for small shows and another for others. This knee jerk reaction by the CAA will be the nail in the coffin for many more air shows this year. Changing display gate heights mid display according to the local traffic, as happened at displays post Shoreham last year, is very dangerous in itself. |
Red 10 (Mike Ling) was very careful on BBC Radio Suffolk this morning, to point out that the Reds' displays were carried out under military regs, and that the decision had nothing to do with Shoreham or the CAA's reaction to it.
|
He would say that wouldn't he. How come the Reds flew many displays last year passing over busy roads i.e. Farnborough . Of course its got to do with the aftermath of Shoreham.

If RAFAT are unable to display at the locations they've refused, one has to wonder what's the point...........:uhoh:
|
I must check my facts! It appears that the Red Arrows have not displayed at The Suffolk Show in recent years, if at all. Correction made. Apologies.
|
Can't recall RAFAT ever displaying at any county show. Surely the presence of livestock would preclude such a display.
|
Well, this site reveals they are
British and UK Airshow 2016 dates - Calendar of British Air Shows 2016 But then, this site RAF Red Arrows - Display dates and venues Doubts that. I hear what you say though about livestock. Sept 1994, Nidderdale Show Pateley Bridge (North Yorkshire, for non Navigators) 2 x USAF A-10's overflew the showground, jinking and wazzing low level as they did. Sheep scattered, goats gone, cows cowered, horses horrified, lambs livid. Owners not too pleased as well. All recorded on BBC local radio live. After 30 mins, all livestock calmed down, big sighs of relief from owners (big cries of joy from manure collectors). 2 minutes later, the A-10's came back and repeated the performance. Whoops A record number of Flying Complaints to Leeming that day. My Biro ran out. Happy days |
I think if you look at the satellite imagery on this link you will understand why the Red Arrows deemed the site unsuitable. Apart from a large industrial complex almost on one doorstep of Trinity Park and housing on the other, nearby the A14 is an extremely busy and often congested dual carriageway carrying a very high volume of container traffic from and to the port of Felixstowe. Bulls running amok - yet another interesting dimension.

Some of you may or may not know, there is/was due to be a practice display by the Reds at Coningsby today. Some of you also may or may not know that there is a an area on private land called 'the mound', accessed from Dogdyke Rd, which is, unsurprisingly, a large earth mound which offers good photographic views over the airfield above the top of the perimeter fence. The farmer who owns the land allows photographers to park on his land and use the mound without any problems, usually, today however, 15 mins before the Reds were due, RAF plod turns up and insists everyone must vacate the mound due to 'health & safety' reasons! Notwithstanding the fact the mound is on private land and she had no legal right to ask people to move off it, is this an indication perhaps of things to come since the tragedy at Shoreham I wonder?

Looking at the aerial view of the showground I will be expecting the Reds to deem Farnborough to be unsuitable as well. There is rather less green space surrounding it than the showground for sure.
Meanwhile there seems to be a certain amount of histrionic panic setting in whenever they carry out a practice. I think Miss Snowdrop would have been on dodgy ground had she been challenged over the health and safety assertion. |
Same now for the Dartmouth display. Carried it out safely for years, now it's a flypast only for 'safety reasons'... What on earth is going on...??:{

Must also rule out the Queens birthday flypast as well?,if flying over built up areas/roads etc is now deemed too dangerous!! In 2016, no air show will go ahead without being subject to an enhanced risk assessment, Following the accident at Shoreham, we introduced three additional risk assessment criteria for all future air displays. These were the proximity of major roads, congested areas and other nearby infrastructure, such as railway lines. This meant that display organisers were expected to identify within their risk assessments how they proposed to manage and mitigate any risks arising from these sources. This resulted in a number of changes being made to air displays held after the Shoreham Airshow. 2.8 We propose to retain and formalise these additional risk criteria, and require event organisers and FDDs to submit their risk assessments to the CAA. We are developing a risk assessment template that will assist event organisers and FDDs. This will be published no later than the end of February 2016. 2.9 Our publication Flying Displays and Special Events: a guide to safety and administrative arrangements also details what liaison the event organiser and FDD are expected to have with the relevant local authority or authorities for the location of their air show, the police and the emergency services, including the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and Royal National Lifeboat Institution for offshore display sites. Action 1: The CAA will specify, for all future air displays the risk assessment criteria that it requires event organisers and Flying Display Directors must use in planning and preparing for air displays of all sizes |
Widger its not all rumour.
At one of the Airshows post Shoreham, the CAA person on site, changed the display parameters of participants mid display according to the amount of traffic on the M11!! |
