NAS Keflavik - the return
|
Always did enjoy a few days at Kef especially when staying off base. But 6 months in winter no thanks! However, a perfect spot for MPA to be based.
|
There used to be a notice in Navy Ops at Keflavik that went along the lines of:
"What is the difference between Keflavik and Alcatraz? You can swim to the mainland from Alcatraz." I don't think it was a popular posting!! |
Nicely timed for the return of the UK MPA fleet.
Now as long as they reform the best sqn, a Burns rematch could be on the cards :ok: |
Ah Kef.
Home to some of the most beautiful women in the world. Unrequited lust at 17½ :O Regards, Den. |
I don't think it was a popular posting!! I have to say, I's love it for someone to pay for to go back there...Iceland a pretty cool place these days (no pun intended). |
TOFO,
There was only one Brass Nut. YS:ok: |

I remember our 2 Nimrod crews playing the P3 crews at 'shotgun' one afternoon at a barbecue. We'd polished off our 8 crates of beer in true shotgun fashion and were wondering where more crates were coming from. We were somewhat surprised at this point to see the P3 crews throwing-up after finishing their first 3 crates. We won.

Happyt days for thee taxi drivers, bet they up the prices, $4 didn't seem too much bet its $10 a pop now.
|
Great det there on the F3 in winter, so all trips flown in the dark. Some sort Bacardi given us that had to be drunk quickly, or it dissolved the glue in the paper cup......

The US Navy built their own hangar and HQ at Blackbushe in 1957 only for the UK government to try to 'close' the airfield in 1960. It wasn't closed, but the local council made sure the US Navy couldn't continue using it by shortening the runway and digging up the taxiway to the hangar.
Had this not happened, maybe the US Navy might still be there instead of Naples, having made plans to extend the Blackbushe main runway to 10,000 ft and build a secondary 7,000ft runway. |
The residents of Keflavik will be pleased with the income stream, at the moment it’s like a one horse town without the horse. |
When doing “the Grand Tour” of visiting the radar sites at Rockville, Polestar and Reitan it was always planned so we went through Keflavik first and visited the package store. The large (gallon?) handled flagons of whisky were always welcomed as party contributions at the latter sites upon arrival. |
Went there on AEW Shacks a couple of times around 1980 - first to liaise with the guys flying the AEW Constellations, then to marvel at the E3s. We stayed in the visiting aircrew accommodation, which was on the floor above the “Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Unit”......... |
Ah the Windbreaker Club- 50 King Teds for $3 and the Portugese accommodation that allowed you to see in all the rooms due to the gaps in the walls. Not to mention the winter cross winds that blew me across the pan on the walk out-on ice- feet not moving the only thing that stopped me ending up in a snow drif was the US liney wagon that stopped my slide- bring it on!! |
Voutezac
They say that if you can remember the BONEYARD, you have never been there.:E Great fun in winter diving out of the upstairs window into a snowdrift and running back upstairs for a cold beer, I think:eek: Heads down, Look out for the flak |
