FAF order MRTT

It has just been announced that Armee de l'air have just ordered 8 (of a planned order of 12) 330 MRTTs.

But sensibly and unlike their neighbours across La Manche, they are going for the version which will carry both an Airbus refuelling boom system and underwing hose-and-drogue refuelling pods.

That's old news bud, as they had ordered them at the end of last year. Was always going to be in the cards as C-135FR replacement.

Plus also last year as a matter of a Personnel Exchange Program between us and the rest of the world, the French being one ...they sent a tanker driver over to sunny Oxon for one such exchange program to experience the Voyager,

?Entente [Most] Cordiale?

Cheers

And a French pilot has recently qualified on an RAAF A-330...boom and all.

Difference between selction/intention to order and actually placing the order. cf RAF P-8 buy.....

France orders three more Airbus A330 MRTT tankers

Airbus Defence and Space has received a firm order from the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) for a further three A330 MRTT Multi-Role Tanker Transport aircraft. This is the third and final tranche of the multi-year contract for 12 A330 MRTTs signed by the French Ministry of Defence in 2014.

I quite like the colour scheme.

I quite like Lieutenant Lise!
Civvy reg, was that just for certification?

Rosevidney1 16th Dec 2018 19:17

I'm sure many here are fans of Lieutenant Lisa!

TBM-Legend 16th Dec 2018 21:21

Vote 1 for Lt Lisa straight from the Vogue Military Academy!

Istres seems to have changed a little, since the Royal Air Force Liaison Party left in May 1958.

Davef68 17th Dec 2018 12:27

What aircraft do FAF have that need a boom tanker? Just the E-3?

Onceapilot 17th Dec 2018 12:51

Love the way the Airbus flys backwards at about 50 sec. ;)

The FAF have the sense to realise that interoperability with other nations' receivers which require a boom is advisable. Also E-3F and presumably its replacement? It also gives the A330MRTT a tanker-tanker capability.

Good to see that the FAF has procured its own aircraft, crewed by FAF crews. None of the expensive PFI nonsense with which the UK is saddled!

The UK will soon have several types which need to refuel from the boom: P-8A, RC-135W and (conceivably) F-35A if the F-35 order is reviewed.... Yet no boom tankers

vascodegama 17th Dec 2018 15:59

Fair point about tanker tanker AAR but I don’t think the FAF went for that option. I am pretty sure that a STANAG exists about
interoperability so it’s a shame that we put the PFI ahead of operational effectiveness.

The (leased) RAF “Tanker” is crewed by RAF crews too!

The (leased) RAF AT asset is crewed by RAF pilots too, and the majority of the time by RAF Cabin Crew.

Some people seem to think because it’s a PFI, Air Tanker and Sponsored Reservists crews are flying the aircraft, that’s not the case.

I do agree however that for your only strategic AT assest and only Tanker I really ought to be a military procurement not PFI.

Bearing inmind the PFI was approved in 2007, what boom receivers did we have then??? P-8, Rivetjoint, F35A were not even on the horizon! I’m sure that’s been discussed to death on other threads anyway.

TBM-Legend 18th Dec 2018 02:38

C-17. The RAAF tanks them often with KC-30's

It’s not just about looking after your own. A significant proportion of Coalition air requires Boom refuelling, something that the RAF cannot currently contribute towards.
