P8 Poseidons possibly to Leuchars as reported in Dundee Courier

Military aircraft could make a return to Leuchars base - Fife / Local / News / The Courier

Just This Once... 27th Oct 2015 08:41

Orions?

Anyway, there is zero chance of repopulating an entire RAF base for the P8. Compared with using the infrastructure already in place at Waddington and the space vacated by 5 Sqn / Sentinel, the costs would be astronomical. Quite frankly we could not man an extra main operating base so this is just a local pipe dream.

AtomKraft 27th Oct 2015 09:03

Why don't we buy the Indian Navy's Tu-142s (BEAR)s, as they appear to be done with them?
Let's face it, our cheapskate country would rather squitter it's money away on human rights, equal opportunities, national bloody health, debt repayment, climate change, gay rights, the bloody EU, and a bunch of other useless ****-than pay for a maritime patrol aircraft.
Who needs one anyway, it's not like we're surrounded by water.

The mini-article is full of errors..................

AtomKraft Come off the fence ...... tell us what you really think..... :ok:

wanabee777 27th Oct 2015 10:20

Next thing you know, they'll be reopening the U.S. sub base at Holy Loch.

aw ditor 27th Oct 2015 10:54

Perhaps with devolution the Scottish Defence Budget could pay for it??

RandomBlah 27th Oct 2015 11:47

I think its highly likely that a Conservative government would put a shiney new platform (of any type) into SNP territory.......

"shiney new platform" & "Conservative government"

Now that’s funny.

I refer you to post #3.

Now what’s not so funny is a uk family where one parent is debarred from signing on due to introduced DWP legislation the other parent working 60 hours a week in a call centre; after rent, council tax and energy card top up they are left with £40 to feed their two children and themselves for the week....in Dundee btw..can you actually BLAME people for voting for anything but the status quo??

If they do things right, they'll put them where they are best positioned, Leuchars would be a more logical location than Waddington. By the way, I've read that SDSR findings will get their first public outing this week?

So Atomkraft, let me get this right you would like a new MPA over spending money on the NHS??
The rest I agree with by the way.

Biggus 27th Oct 2015 13:29

WARNING - THREAD DRIFT!

The fire services actually put out very few fires in this country these days, thats because of all the efforts that have successfully gone into FIRE PREVENTION.

If a similar approach was adopted, i.e. prevention rather than cure, within the NHS then this country could save tens of billions of pounds! How would this prevention be accomplished? By getting people to take responsibility for their own health, rather than delegating it to the state. Educate the population properly on healthly eating practices, basic exercise needs, sleeping requirements, etc. Stop spending billions of pounds on "fixing" medical conditions which were preventable in the first place, leaving time, space and resources to deal with disease and injury!!

Sorry for the interuption to your normal viewing....

BACK TO THE THREAD!!

Loads of room at Durham Tees Valley, a P8 was based just last year for a week.

That is very funny.

The Old Fat One 27th Oct 2015 15:27

It's an excellent, sensible, pragmatic and economically sound idea (to base the new MPA force at Leuchars)...in fact, it is no brainer.

And my views are in no way biased.

TOFO of Fife.

Pure speculation by the Courier, absolutely no chance of re-opening Leuchars now the Army has just gone in. IMO there are only three locations in the frame, Waddington as a home base (pretty much a no brainer as the defacto ISTAR home) with Dets at either Lossie or Kinloss. A mix and match of P8s and Typhoon in the circuit at Lossie in the present day probably negates Lossiemouth, even though Shacks and Buccs seemed to get on OK in days past. My money is on some sort of re-opening of Kinloss, maybe not a full opening as such but probably for some sort of FOB with maybe even the Sim located in that brand newish empty ex MRA4 Sim Sqn building.
One other point not often mentioned, if it is going to be Waddington, where would they house the significant influx of Aircrew and Groundcrew, from what I gather MQs and Barrack Block accommodation at Waddington is very much in short supply just now. Whereas at Kinloss with rumours flying around that the Army boys have been given their marching orders "heads up" there is plenty of accommodation for singlies and married people loads of quarters on northside, and of course plenty of unused new buildings for everyone to use as operating facilities.
My only concern about Kinloss how does "Call me Dave" slither out of explaining he has authorised re-opening a base he shut.

camelspyyder 27th Oct 2015 16:08

I would love to know where this "significant influx of Aircrew and Groundcrew" is going to be sourced from. We haven't enough of either to man the existing fleets.

Oh and why would an MMA need to be based on the coast anyway? Given the incredibly low frequency of Soviet submarine deployments to NORLANT in the last 20 years, it's hardly a solid case for re-opening a seaside airbase way up North. IMHO ASW is quite possibly not going to be the full time primary duty of the aircraft.

Arclite01 27th Oct 2015 16:11

My bets are:

Lossie for Dets.
Home basing and Deep servicing at Waddo.
No role for Kinloss.
No role for Leuchars

Not sure of Scottish diversion airfields (EDI maybe).

Not a vaguely sensible basing policy but 'If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.'*(Blackadder)

You suggest re-opening Kinloss but not Leuchars because the Army have just moved in?

Further, u-turns are always easily explained away, always have been, this time Mr Cameron has some genuine answers to hand; revival of economy, re-surgence of Russian military hegemony, all inside the last five years.

FB:)

PS: The Scotsman states that the runway at Kinloss needs re-surfacing?
