What is happening to HMS Gannet?
Hi
With the standing down of RN SAR by 2017. I was wondering what will happen to HMS Gannet? Without the SK's is there a justification for retaining the Base? At present we have russian subs practically beaching themselves on the Clyde waiting for the Bombers to deploy out of Faslane and due to lack of LRMPA etc. I would have thought there was justification for at least a Flight of Merlins to be stationed there? Cheers |
Better buy some more then.

Strikes me that the reigning "monarchs of the glen" would rather like to see the "bombers" gone. That being the case, and if fulfilled, it seems there would be absolutely no requirement for air protection, patrol or anything else. I reckon the sooner our "bombers" are moved to England the better. I ask one question, would the SNP require protection from our nuclear deterrent, when based outside its own borders ?
Smudge:ok: |
Gannet has been a SAR flight only since 2001, but the facilities have been used by visiting aircraft for Joint Warrior etc. There has (as far as I know) been no public statements re the base future once SAR moves to Glasgow.
It would seem sensible to retain at least the option for expanding the military side again on a C&M basis, but when did 'sensible' and MOD planning ever co-indice. |
Busy this year - From the FAAOA website
HMS GANNET HOSTS JOINT WARRIOR AIRCRAFT ................... LFH |
Looking on Google Earth, it looks like the domestic site is closed, so just the airfield side remaining anyway.
|
Civil SAR is staying at Prestwick in a new build hangar. HMS Gannet is staying at Prestwick for Merlin and Joint Warrior deployments well into the future.
|
So Gannet SAR or HMS Gannet itself has decommissioned - I am confused :ugh:

PIK1341,
..."HMS Gannet is staying at Prestwick for Merlin and Joint Warrior deployments well into the future."... Er, reality check. It closed on 4th February. |

Smudge:ok: BTW you may gave seen corbyn/cmd's performances over the last week. Now do you actually blame the Scots for deserting Liarbour and the Tories en-mass? |
If it closed on Friday then why is the SKTU commencing ops on Monday ? Why do, and going forward, Merlins op from Gannet and why does Joint Warrior op in April ?
|
operating from a 'FOB' rather than an RNAS? No idea for sure myself - maybe a pinger or other such almost worthy fish-head could let us know (:p

why is the SKTU commencing ops on Monday ? Because there is no other feasible site to operate from. Well, I guess Culdrose would be feasible as Sea Kings are still operating from there but there are probably other considerations. |
