Argentina plans to buy 24 Gripen NGs
 

Following the signing of the bilateral "Declaration of democracy and peace" between the defence ministers of Brazil and Argentina yesterday, Buenos Aires has opened negotiations for the purchase of 24 Gripen NGs and 6 KC-390s from Embraer.

The Gripens are to be built locally under licence from SAAB, with 36 to be delivered to the Brazilian air force from 2019. Delivery dates to Argentina weren't announced.

How a virtually bankrupt Argentina plans to pay for the aircraft wasn't revealed, and the possibility exists that the US/UK veto over fitted equipment will actually scupper the Brazilian deal as well.

Argentina doesn't know what it's planning to buy. Between surplus Mirage F1s, F-16s, IAI Kfirs, CAC FC-1s, Su-24s (believe that one or not), and Gripens, who knows what they'll eventually plump for?

As has been said before though, the UK makes 35% of every Gripen E and will veto any Argentine deal. Of course, Argentina could source the radar, landing gear, ejector seat, etc from elsewhere, but it's not likely.

I find it hard to see where the Brazilians would go back to the drawing board on a 100+ aircraft program because they can't sell 24 aircraft to a nation that has no money.

This seems to be more a case where they don't want to tell the neighbor YOU CANNOT HAZ GRIPEN, NOT YOURS.

It would be quicker to list the aircraft which HAVEN'T been linked to an Argentinian sale. Unfortunately it's a Catch 22 for them in that if their economy improved enough to afford any of them, they would no longer need the distraction of Falklands sabre-rattling.

I seem to recall them wanting refurbished F-16As before the US pacified them with the A-4AR Fightinghawk. I also don't see the US authorizing the F414G for sale to Argentina, probably the most difficult part of the Gripen E to substitute.

I'm not sure how much financial aid the Argentinians receive from the US, and that would certainly be a factor in their decision making, but I'm fairly certain that the Russians would cut them a deal on some MiG-29s if only to annoy the US, and the Chinese are reportedly eager to export the Thunder.

Argentina has options, but it's more interesting to speculate about why they don't pursue them.

Lack of $$$$ I'd say. Even gifted aircraft require cash to fly them.

The only likely replacement for these jets will be of Chinese or Russian origin in a deal which is an exchange of goods for the aircraft. I don't think there is the slightest possibility that the Argentine Air Force will operate the Grippen in the future.

Let's see what happens after the elections later this year.

Brazil does not have any interest in getting involved in the Argentine problems, they create their problems and stay with them, but do not involve Brazil.

Gripen is not a Brazilian plane, is Swedish, and Brazil has no patent rights or trade on this plane, it's crazy to find that Brazil can promise something you can not keep.

The truth is that the Argentines only cause problems to the Brazilians.

But it seems that with the new minister of defense, they have forgotten the Gripen, less harm.

It might prove better in the long run if Argentina continued to be supplied by the West rather than Russia or China. At least we have a modicum of control that way.

What for do they (Argentinians) need fighter jets? They have no money, their conflict with Chile (about a few islands in the south) was finally settled in 90's, strange. I was travelling to Brazil and Argentina some 3-4 years ago (tourism), and it was funny to hear smth like "yes, we are doing not well economically, but now we have Messi and it is so good for the nation". Since that they got the Pope as well :-)

We like Scotland, Wales, but we dislike England. Except, of course, for the Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden, Sex Pistols, Queen and any other band, past, present or future. We also love Benny Hill and Kate Middleton is almost daily in the news, and the current trend is to use a UK flag in the shirts. And yes, we are contradictory people.

Regarding the brazilians, the problem is brazilian girls loves argentine boys, but not otherwise (a Brazilian minister pointed that problem a few years ago - and thats no joke). So they envy us.

About AAF fast jets, the likely solution in the short term is to acquire A4 engines and other spares from the Israeli Air Force, even some jets and ammo. And that's it.

I do not get why people coming from so properous countries are worry about the military power of a country like Argentina with so many economic and social problems.

Maybe, because those people from SO develope and prosperous countries have bad dreams...

I am not in a trade business, but a first sight question is why not to buy planes from Russia (like Venezuela did) if your government thinks the country needs them. But again, Venezuela has serious tension with Columbia, while Argentina seems to manage good relations with the neighbours. Is that not so?

It was explained to me that the reference to "Argentineans thinking they're English"

was

a) the habit of believing you are better than your neighbours

b) a high level of snobbery

c) a desire to wear tweed jackets and drink tea

d) playing polo (yes I know we got it from you)

all of which are definitely English (but not Bolivian) habits...................

I do not see either the relationship between the comments about the Argentinian citizens and the possible purchase of Grippen.
