Royal Mint Battle of Britain 50p coin
http://www.iwmshop.org.uk/images/item_25976.jpg
Ohh dear, nice coin, shame about the mount, cannon armed Spitfires that never fought in the Battle, and belonging to an RCAF Sqn that never even formed until Nov 41, a year after the battle was fought... No. 416 Squadron , Canadian Air Force Nice try....... :ugh: |
Great idea, but one would think they might have done better on the detail
|
..... say nothing about the aircraft paint scheme.... let them think that at least one item is historically accurate of the period!
|
Surprised the front aircraft isn't coded JE-J ;)

I'm sure somebody covered this on an earlier thread. I remember a comment that it was very topical, what with three pilots racing to get to two serviceable aircraft!
|
Looks like a total cock up all round on this one. Apparently the coin itself is now having to be re-designed to show how much it is worth....
|
If that is so, can the message be got to the Mint, along the lines of post 1
|
I find it rather sad that there were so many errors with this coin. Clearly, The Royal Mint intended to commemorate an historic period of events that most of us on this Forum are extremely proud of. It would be great if these errors could be passed to them so that the 50p (AL1) presentation will be what was intended and accurate.

I rather liked the quote from the Royal Mint here Royal Mint criticised over 'inaccurate' Battle of Britain commemoration - Telegraph
“Most of our customers purchase products for the coin itself, rather than the display packaging in which it is housed.” So that's OK, then? |
Just to add a little balance, the coin looks very good and I think was discussed somewhere on PPRuNe late last year, the display box/poster is total hoop. Have a look here

Here you go - a bit better than MkIXs with cannons...

Always happy to oblige......:ok: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUGTTKOLLgs Jack |
The original work of art was painted by Wilf Hardy over 40 years ago. Wilf did a lot of work on behalf of RAFBF in his time; as you would expect, he is now an elderly chap. Licensing artwork can be expensive, and I suspect that the organisers in this case have exploited available goodwill rather then pay for accuracy.

Hmmm ... Hurricane US-X in overall olive paint?
