Russia wants East.Germany back...

Russia may declare 1990 reunification illegal - Germany's news in English

Bet that
1. There's plenty thinking give it back to them
2. The Ossies are bricking it....

I should think this is all getting a bit boring for the Poles. Squeezed between Germans and Russians again?
They must just long for a bit of variety, like when the Swedes came from the North or the Ottomans from the south. ;)

Herod 29th Jan 2015 13:17

Unlike Crimea, which was part of Ukraine, the DDR was an "independent(?)" entity, not part of Russia

Wan Wei Luke 29th Jan 2015 14:36

Bring back the Trabant!

Wander00 29th Jan 2015 14:39

Somewhat late in the day for that call I would have thought

skydiver69 29th Jan 2015 14:43

Wasn't East Germany just Germany pre 1939 so what would be the basis of any Russian claim. If the Russians start making claims against other countries hadn't they better start looking at the Japanese islands they took from Japan at the end of WWII?

PhilipG 29th Jan 2015 14:50

I was under the impression that the Russians still had part of the old Greater Germany, Kaliningrad, it would seem that this is not enough for the Kremlin?

Capetonian 29th Jan 2015 14:54

Putin, or Putler as my Russian friends call him, may well be the greatest danger to European peace and stability since Herr Schickelgruber.

And Crimea was part of the Ottoman Empire for quite a long time, too.

Tu.114 29th Jan 2015 15:53

In 1989/1990, in the 2+4 talks (2 Germanies plus USSR, USA, UK and France), also the USSR agreed to the German reunification.

A bit late for Mr. Putin to change his mind, methinks.

AreOut 29th Jan 2015 16:11

Crimea was part of Ukraine while Ukraine was part of USSR, certainly nobody from Moscow would hand their strategic port to Ukraine if they thought there was just a smallest chance of Ukraine seceding from USSR.

It should become part of Russia in 1990 but back then Russia had other problems...

Now what did we do with all those 2 & 4 ATAF airfields, misplaced somewhere in the midst of the euphoria of the Wall falling.

Couldn't agree more.

Clever than the Ayatollahs, and desperate to project Russian 'power' again on the World stage. Oh, but isn't Russia broke [again]? Never mind, truck on regardless in the sure knowledge that the Russian people are 100% behind him ... possibly.

I wish him an early coronary. He's lost credibility with the West, now we must just wait until he fall off his Former KGB perch and some semblance of sanity/normality returns.

Vladimir ... you are 2nd echelon, and slightly deranged. Get used to it.

Maybe not just East Germany?

BBC Reporting at BBC News - Russian military jets 'disrupted UK aviation'

Russian military planes flying near UK airspace caused "disruption to civil aviation" on Wednesday, the UK Foreign Office said.

It said the Russian aircraft did not enter UK airspace, but the manoeuvres were "part of increasing pattern of out-of-area operations" by Russia.

The planes were "escorted" by RAF jets "throughout the time they were in the UK area of interest", officials added.

Russia's ambassador has been summoned to "account for the incident".
On the radio, they just said that they flew down the West Coast to the English Channel.

Yes, but that was the USSR, not Russia. It never (as far as I know) belonged to Russia.

PBY 29th Jan 2015 17:24

Crimea was part of Russia from 1783 till 1954

Rosevidney1 29th Jan 2015 17:34

We are condemned to live in increasingly interesting times.

Hmmm. Be careful what you wish for; the alternatives may well be lot worse than what we have now. Better the Devil etc.:hmm:
