Church Fenton

I'm sure some of you are aware of this but for those of you who aren't...

I know many of you must have trained at CF.

Hundreds of planes land at North Yorkshire airbase (From York Press)

Chris owns Garforth strip near Leeds and I congratulate the guy on reversing the trend for GA and ex mil sites in this country becoming yet more housing estates/industrial complexes.

It may possibly create 100 jobs, but it'll bugger more than that number employed at Sherburn Aero Club, just down the road.....

airpolice 7th Jan 2015 10:30

It may well be the end for Sherburn as we know it, but good for Yorkshire GA

Fenton is a great place with all the facilities in place due to the "money no object" spending by MOD.

Two runways, and a wee bit grass if required, and lots of hangar space, what's not to like?

Perhaps if the (non gliding) GA community consolidate there instead of Sherburn, Rufforth Bagby, Breighton, Full Sutton et al, then the general use of Yorkshire airspace would be safer as there would be fewer overheads to steer around.

LBA & Finningley could stick to commercial ops with training schools relocating to Fenton, allowing for training without the delays caused by commercial airline stuff hogging the runway, and of course, GA not getting in the way of the commercial stuff.

Isn't Linton going to be up for sale in a few years too?

ETOPS 7th Jan 2015 11:33

Three runways
Are you sure officer? Would you like to blow into this....:ok:

airpolice 7th Jan 2015 12:17

Biggus, I thought that when they put in the new tower.

The trouble with Linton is the awful journey from the A1.

Access to the North West of the airfield is brutal for HGV traffic so not attractive for multi purpose use. Leeming is a one trick pony with the north/south runway, despite good A1 access.

Church Fenton, I reckon, is the best of the bunch for what this company seem to be planning.

ETOPS, I'm not pissed, just in a time warp. This is from 2007.

But, yeah, you are right, I meant to type two the first time.

Thread drift and you may laugh, but I once flew for a company which tried to tell us that, for fuel planning, 09/27 counted as two runways. Aye, right, Boss, if you say so :=

Was talking this very afternoon to an employee of Sherburn who said that many pokers were in the fire and no one was worried about loosing their job.

Incidentally re GA airfields closing at an alarming rate Hucknall is the next one to go in March. Free landings for anyone who wants to fly in for the last time. I hear Wellesbourne Mountford, North Coates and Leicester are under threat from the developers as well.

Off the top of my head Manston, Plymouth, Blackpool and Filton have gone recently and these aren't GA grass strips.

fabs 7th Jan 2015 17:25

Who knows? The lease on Sherburn Airfield may not be renewed with Sherburn Aero Club and the club may look for a move.

thing 7th Jan 2015 17:29

Sherburn Aero Club don't own Sherburn. Unless I misunderstood what you wrote.

4Greens 7th Jan 2015 18:50

If Linton goes, where will training take place ?

Ex 80 Course - wonderful time was had there.

Simplythebeast 7th Jan 2015 19:15

Training will move to Valley.

fabs 7th Jan 2015 20:39

Sherburn lease the airfield I think. That lease is due for renewal in a few years, it may be the owners would prefer to expand the adjacent industrial estate.

It might also be that the potential business for such an expanded estate might go to the non airfield part of Church Fenton a lot sooner than a redeveloped Sherburn would come on the market.

Lots of possibilities in the local area with the MOD selling this land. I don't know what Mr. Makin has paid for it, but I suspect that he has wee goldmine on his hands.

The move from Sherburn would be fantastic, if they leave the "committee" behind. Bunch of old farts living in the yesteryear.

N707ZS 10th Jul 2015 15:36

Six months on has anything happened? It must be costing large amounts of money to run the airfield even just paying business tax rates.
