2x Chinook

Just were circling Hampstead Heath, central London. One Chinook stayed circling whilst one landed on the heath next to gospel oak station.

Couldn't see what was going on as its pitch black. Think it spooked a man walking his dog as he came sprinting off the Heath.

VIP pick up?

Anyone heard of this before?

Probably out dogging :p

Stinky McFin 15th Dec 2014 22:56

Apparently, it is a common location where people with big choppers are known to gather...

Especially after dark....

Wasn't there a similar thread last year?

Chinooks Over London

Today's [17th December] London Evening Standard has picked up on this story here:
Call the copters: why are Chinooks circling the capital? - London Life - Life & Style - London Evening Standard

Olaf Haitink was concerned. He tweeted: “I saw a Chinook and it had another helicopter flying in formation with it. It’s not for fun when a Chinook flies over London!”
Bollocks! We need more Contra-rotating Death Bananas. They make me smile.

What an appalling article!!

It was the end of the day and north London was settling down to bed when James Wharton heard buzzing and spotted a curious sight. He sought reassurance on Twitter, saying on Monday evening: “I’ve definitely just seen a Chinook land in north London out of my window and another halo circle above. Hampstead area.” Others were glad he had shared, for they were equally confused. INCA replied: “Me too. Did it definitely land? I saw it rise from the Heath area.” And Robin Joyce proposed a theory: “Might be filming of James Bond, which was happening all day in London today.”
Closely followed by:

And so the city turned detective over these unidentified flying objects.
I'm no Sherlock Holmes but I reckon James answered that question straight away!! :ugh:

2 Chinooks is always the answer, what's the question...

2 Chinooks is always the answer, what's the question...
How many Chinooks do you take to a job that requires 1 Chinook?

The article said two things that stood out for me.
It said the Chinook is a HEAVY helicopter, but didn't give its weight or say if it is able to carry easy extra weight......it is heavy after all.

It also said that the helicopter is usually painted in dark colours. Have any of you ever seen a crimson or all navy blue one? I've seen the usual green, green/grey sandy cammo and even some lovely one off schemes but have no idea what the point of mentioning their colour was in article.

But look on the bright side, our country spends billions on defence of the realm, yet Londoners turn to Twitter for reassurance.

They have to - the so-called leaders of the Nation can't help:

I doubt the reason for their presence would have been the Bond movie filming as I understand that due to a Product Placement agreement the next two Bond movies have to feature AgustaWestland products not Boeing ones.

I would hope it was related to some CT exercise and therefore nothing more will be heard of it (from official channels anyway - until the books come out...). However, I fear the post re the exertions of Mr Craig may be more likely. Always amazed me how much effort went into supplying MoD assets for profit-making film/TV productions. Please don't wheel out the "great publicity, needed for recruitment, show the taxpayer where their money goes" arguments. From personal experience, the case I'm aware of was driven purely by the need of a Very Senior Officer to make an impact during his reporting year. Therefore the Not-So Senior Officers were told to 'make it so' regardless of impact :(
