Just Gnattering....

Ok all you guys of a certain age, time to start writing your Christmas lists....

Airfix are about to issue a 1/48 scale model of the Folland Gnat T1. This scale will give the model a 6" wingspan, much bigger than the 1/72 offering from the same company.

Though not an avid modeller, my eyes were drawn to the latest issue of the Airfix mag, on the shelves now, which carries a detailed article on the kit (stock # A05123, £16.99).

Decals will be provided to dress the model as a 4FTS jet, though an improved decal sheet is available from S&M Silk (S&M?) which provides a large variety of serial numbers for nose & tail. Check your logbook & reproduce one of your mounts!

That could just go on my list......But Mrs W and friends just did a 7 day, 500 mile cycle ride down past the Gulf of Arcachon, and found a place giving experience flights in a float plane - and that is top of my bucket list

Valiantone 20th Sep 2014 18:49

I'm still trying to get to grips producing a respectable Canberra, from the 1/48th scale offerings of the B.2 and B(I).8,I have 6 and also a couple of ground instructional airframes....

The failures pile wasn't pretty:(

Alas I'm not quite as good as some and have yet to even contemplate the Javelin, and Sea Vixen. Let alone get back onto the Lightnings

Airfix have something up their sleeve for Novembers IPMS but won't say....

I'm hoping its either a Shack or a Hastings:rolleyes:

I doubt a Shack or Hastings as it's supposed to be 1/24th scale, the good news is the 1/24 Tiffie sold 8000 kits in the first month, that's got to be good news for them to produce more.

Ooohh.1/24th Shack!!!! yes please :ok:
Regards, Den
Forgot to add, as long as it's an MR2.

Float plane at Biscarrosse

Sorry for slight thread drift - Wonder00, Mrs Frelon and I did this some 10 years ago at Biscarrosse. Cessna 172, fabulous experience. Just like Chuck Brown's Piper Cubs (that we tried a few years before) only bigger!!
Don't dream it, do it!

Wander00 20th Sep 2014 21:04

Frelon - many thanks - what were their charges like - do you know if they have a website

gnat

Y'know I might just buy one of those.

Janda 20th Sep 2014 22:03

When I was a kid back in the 60's the Gnat was the first Airfix model that I built. Closely followed by many WW2 planes. Ah childhood! :D

Guzz 20th Sep 2014 22:55

Airfix have certainly upped their game in recent years, and have given us some pretty left of field releases. Who saw a 1:24 Mossie coming? Even more surprising was that they actually sold a load!

If anyone here fancies buying a gnat (or any other model for that matter) and can't really be bothered with the hassle of building it, I've been known to knock out the odd commission here and there. A percentage of my fee will also go to a very worthy forces charity. Just saying!

Guzz.

Guzz - it might be an idea to put a link up to some photos so people can see what standard you have previously built models to.

P6 Driver 21st Sep 2014 10:59

Very nice!
I particularly like the weathering.
:D

Guzz 21st Sep 2014 15:51

Thanks P6!

54Phan 21st Sep 2014 16:39

Yes, very nice work, Guzz!

I shall certainly be adding a 1/48th Gnat to my pile of unbuilts, I will ask 54Phan's beloved if she would do the honours for Crimbas. After all, I've been a very good boy this year. I think maybe a silver/dayglo scheme might look nice on the shelf.

P6 Driver 21st Sep 2014 17:49

Although the 1/48 offering is soon to be released, if you're into 1/72, the recent new tool of the Gnat is also worth looking at - good moulding and nice to put together.

One question for Airfix though... On the artwork for the 1/48 Gnat, why are both crew wearing American flying helmets?
