Army to FAA Navy transfer
 

I've had a look around and used the search function but I'm unable to find the information I'm Looking for.
(Please excuse errors - I'm typing on my phone)

I am a 7.5yr Army Officer (Captain) and am Currently in the process of trying to transfer to the FAA. My questions are:

1. Other than completing flying grading, how else will I be assessed and what will the next step be provided I pass?

2. Assuming I'm good/lucky enough, when are the next few pilots courses?

3. Has anyone else here been through this process and/or have any advice for me?

Are you an aviator already? If not, I would suggest given your seniority as an approximation for age, you are too old for Flying training (must start before 24th birthday).

If you are an aviator, then I suspect your case will be looked at individually by the casework cell, and no one on here will be able to give you a fully correct answer.

Sorry, as the equivalent of a Rear Admiral, your flying career is over. The good news is they have plenty of posts.

Yep. I did it and I was also the Flight Training Officer at Dartmouth so have a pretty good clue on it! I was also not AAC, I came from the Infantry as an Officer so had to do Grading etc first. PM me if you want to chat.

You need to be goodlooking, well endowed, able to drink like a fish, have working sealegs and be an above average aviator; otherwise the Crabs should take you. Good luck !

Thanks guys. Just some clarification, I'm not an aviator and yes I'm too old but somehow I've been loaded on to flying grading and the Navy are taking a look at me so please ignore the age issue. I've already passed army flying grading and aptitude and I've flown roughly 40 hours. The AAC is not an option for me.

Assuming you are acceptable to the career Managers i.e. you are worth transferring, I would expect you to complete a short-ish Navalisation course at BRNC and then into the flying stream.

However, give the relatively few training slots and your age I am surprised they are willing to take you.

Just out of curiosity, if you've already passed Army Flying Grading and aptitude and flown 40 hours, why isn't the AAC an option?

From memory, it's a situation full of 'grey areas' - in other words, it depends on you, and how much each side want/need you to make the move.

I did it from the RAF to FAA rather than the Army and already had all the quals the RN wanted - hence it was easy to get in, and half a day at BRNC was all that was required before I had some nice new gold stripes. The bigger issue was actually getting the RAF to let me go - in the end I had to PVR and do the full time. So I took full resettlement (which was a nice 3 month break on full pay) before starting with the FAA.

My top tip is to make sure your 'sponsor' at the RN end is proactive with your Army career people - you don't want to get caught between the gaps. Pension transfer is another thing - but that has not turned out to be an issue (but I was on 75 so definitely get that checked out).
