Interesting situation if true.

Is the CIA in the UK doing such an investigation?

Could there be serious threats to the UK from Internal Radical Jihadists?

Is the UK Military equipped and prepared to assist in such a situation or would it only be the Police and MI5 left to deal with the problem if it occurred?

Can't help but wonder if the UK did the same during the 70s and 80s in places like Boston and NYC.

Just what sort of threat do these 'Jihadists' really pose? I'm sure they are capable of some mischief but policing them in the UK is the duty of...the Police, specifically Special Branches, and the Security Servoce. There will be some very limited and specialist military support, but that's it. Yasmine Alibhi-Brown wrote, in an otherwise sensible article in yesterday's Independent, 'that spying achieved nothing'. By this, we presume she means active and close surveillance of persons of interest in the UK. Actually, this 'spying' has been very, very successful in not only disrupting plots, but also bringing a number of would-be matyrs to justice.

As to the alleged presence of a CIA team - I think that this can be regarded - at best - as journalistic hyperbole and demonstrates scant understanding of the differing roles of intelligence and enforcement organisations.

In our context, bearing in mind this is pprune, the practical effect is likely to be more security diktats, queues, bossy Napoleonic types and random confiscations for us all to enjoy.

Am I the only one that feels terrorism isn't quite as much of a serious threat as, say, the the constant decline of our National influence in the world and the ability to take what we need from anywhere in the world, should the time come that we need to?

If 'they' (bad they, not good they) wanted to really do some catastrophic damage, there are ways. You can't convince me that that this country is locked down tight to smuggled individuals and weapons, and that MI5 and the rest of the security services can track every potential explosive ingredient, privately hired aircraft and every small boat that turns up on our shore in the middle of the night.

Just look at the Mumbai attacks.

But then I do have a terminal case of cynicism and might just be wrong.

Spot on, jolly green. Aviation security being a case in point; confiscating yoghurt and contact lense fluid ...and all the while you can wander onto a train/subway/ferry/bus with jerry cans of whatever, no questions asked. A cynical exercise in being seen to "do something"

I wouldn't say it is perpetuated by Western governments, but it's certainly encouraged in a sense.

Considering the economic weight of military spending $/GDP, in order to keep the great unwashed satisfied with having their tax dollars spent hand over fist on tanks, fighters and submarines, there needs to be an enemy.

The Soviets did a great job keeping Americans in employment for 45 years. The move to the Middle East started the year after they finished..

So the circular argument begins!



If we spent not one single red cent on "Defense" or "Security" and closed all our overseas Embassies and Consulates and contracted out those services to the Swiss, would it prevent an attack on any of our homelands?

Don't know but reckon after 5 years savings we could have eliminated lots of poverty.

Social pressure has always been the most effective way to keep things under control. It may be harsh, but it works.

As clearly shown by Russia over the kidnapping of the 4 diplomats !

Once the first one was killed, all gloves were off.

They were never bothered again and all it took was one set of testicles
of a family member posted with a note.

Passed the being nice to people element of it, failed the being nasty to people as just wasn't as nasty as required.

Well IIRC they have a large office in C London - the location is known but for once I'm going to be responsible and allow other people to Google itlook for it on the web
