chickenlover,
all personal pics and tales of the 'K' from start to finish are most welcome. Join the expanding club. Smudge, I was on several windmill starts especially in the early days when the probability the brakes overheating was not always appreciated. I remember us doing one at Akro with our intended pax less than amused as they watched from the terminal. |

Glorious photographs chickenlover. Them was the days, as they say. Great shot of the guys "pinking" Albert, I reckon I know a few of them. In fact, several of them.
Smudge:ok: |
Great pics Chickenlover ... keep em coming ... and welcome to the thread :ok:
With a "Wheels On" at Alert Airfield Canada (82°30′N 62°19′W) ... then this is currently the furthest North RAF Albert has been :ok: |
I bet the Lightning was on the buffet with Albert straining the engine mounts for that formation shot :D:D:D:D
|
Glad you like them-lots more where they came from-Coff, we went quite a long way north from Alert looking for a wreck from the 50s, or chasing polar bears-all under the guise of 'training" :)
The formation work with the Lightnings was surprisingly easy, we were trying to get a shot of a Lightning at right angles to the Herc which never quite came off... good fun trying though and we got some good snaps. 52 photographers in the back and 2 of them offered us copies... most of these were taken by the crew I think. One nice photog sent a lovely set of slides which I must try and find. http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/p...dlightning.jpg http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/p...pyofimg274.jpg http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/p...pyofimg276.jpg http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/p...pyofimg273.jpg |
Chickenlover ... I'm just waiting now for one of our WIWOL Members to drop by and say ... "I remember that !" :ok:
On the North South thing ... Let's see who claims an "overfly" of either 90N or 90S :} |
Smudge ... Cracking story last night old chap :ok:
And you can fix HF ATU's on the Albert as well :8 I hope Mrs Smudge is OK up in your loft ... it's a bit hot for that kind of work :) |
Thanks Coff,
Mrs S is back down now, but we still can't locate my albums. She can go back later when its cooler. ATU's ? A Nairobi trip ISTR, did I tell you about it, or were you there ? Smudge:ok: |
Coff I know one of them frequents these parts.....
He took a great picture of the formation which I have. I'm sure he won't mind me posting it here with due credit-it is sadly faded in its frame so may need some work before an airing. I'll be interested to see if the Co-pilot I gave my ride in the lightning to is on here. I'm not bitter, honest I'm not......:) |
Smudge ...
ATU = Aerial Tuning Unit ... Fairies stuff ... You told everyone about it on my "Snap Crackle Pop" Thread :ok: |
AA62 ...
I assume we are now all in for a few treats based on RAF Alberts excursions and adventures out of Kai Tak ... if so bring em on :ok: |
I wonder if there are any tales or pictures from Thorney Island, and Albert. The "holiday isle" closed before I could wangle a posting there, as did Fairford as a possible destination. Whilst my Herk career was Colerne, Lyneham and GE'ing. There were loads of other locations. But Kai Tak has the exotic tick. Only managed one trip to Hong Kong in Five years as a GE. My Captain, a real gentleman, who had operated in the area on Hunters in a previous existence, donated a whole day to showing me the sights. I will never forget the day, or the Captain.
Smudge :ok: |
