Air Commodore 'Ras' Berry (CBE, DSO, DFC and Bar)
Spink London announce the sale of an important Battle of Britain group in their upcoming sale of Orders, Decorations, Campaign Medals and Militaria. The auction, will take place on 24 April 2014 at its London saleroom.
Air Commodore 'Ras' Berry (CBE, DSO, DFC and Bar). Berry was accredited with at least 14 victories in air combat and over 30 claims on enemy aircraft in 1940. Pilot's Flying Log Books (25.4.1937-23.8.1946; 8.10.1947-30.11.1956 and 7.2.1957-15.7.1959) are to be auctioned with the medal group along with other significant related militaria. Born in Hull in 1917, Berry, a noted Battle of Britain pilot, shot down 3 German Messerschmitt 109s in one day. Planes continued to play a prominent role in his post-war career and his ongoing service saw him receive both the OBE (1946) and CBE (1965). Recognition of his significant contribution extended to being chosen as part of a select group to lead Sir Winston Churchill's funeral procession in 1965. Park: 'This young pilot has shown great bravery and determination in pressing home his attacks to close range. He has also led his section with skill and dash. He is cheerful and hard working. He has shot down six enemy aircraft and probably several others. I strongly recommend him for the Immediate award of the Distinguished Flying Cross.' Coff. |

Another fine group TTN However as I'm not allowed to remortgage the house I shan't be bidding ;) I did once own a Battle of Britain group to an air gunner - it's often forgotten that Blenheims also took part in the Battle of Britain, and their observers and air gunners also received the clasp. My bloke also shot down an ME 109, not quite on a par with Berry's total, but pretty good for a Blenheim gunner. |

'Raz' was very lucky. 603 were sent down to Hornchurch to relieve 74 Squadron on the 25 of August and went straight into combat. By the 25th of September fifteen of the twenty four original pilots were dead and two more very seriously injured.
Only 'Raz', 'Stap Me' Stapleton, Brian Carbury and George Denholm survived the war. |
