Long term road closures affecting MMA

Hi all,

With the electrification of the Great Western Railway, certain bridges are to close for up to 6 months. This will no doubt affect journeys for some people who need to cross the railway in order to get to work.

Has anyone had any success with changing MMA to reflect the change in distance due to lengthy road closures?

Cheers

I had a job that involved a lot of MMA over two years. On more than one occasion, the optimum route was unavailable due to either roadworks or flooding. On each occasion, the mileage actually travelled was claimed and notes put into the relevent box to explain why. In one case, which involved a +25 mile diversion in Cumbria due to a flood under a railway bridge, I took a photograph of car next to flood water and bridge. I never needed the proof. The system was quite pragmatic about such things, but honesty and explanation up front is, I believe, the key.

Thought this was about our new Multi-Mission Aircraft (P8 MMA) due to be ordered in SDSR 15 for a moment! :E

You drive it, you claim it.

I don't know if the anti-terrorism rules still apply where you were allowed a 10% extra for varying your route :)

In the past I used 1 route TO work and another FROM work (due to adverse cambers and heavy traffic)

When asked to confirm my HTD, I provided a Google Earth plot of the route THERE & BACK and my claim for the return/2 was accepted.

Currently I claim for the fastest route as the shortest route takes over 50% more time to travel.
Fastest is 76miles return - 34mins single (quickest at 2300hrs)-45mins (normal traffic)
Shortest is 65miles return - 52mins single-92mins

Note:
Apart from 150yds outside of my house to main road....
Fastest is on County Council/Highways Agency gritted roads
Shortest includes 4-line East Coast Main Line level crossing (add 15mins at the wrong time) and is not gritted.

When I've explained, it has never been a problem.

A different approach is taken at my unit:

Duty travel is always by the shortest in terms of time, whilst HDT is by the shortest in terms of distance.

The rationale being that when on duty, the shorter the travelling time, the less likely you are to claim subsistence allowance, whereas travelling from your private residence to work on a daily basis is your own business, and if it takes 30 mins longer by a shorter route then so be it.
