I actually find it incomprehensible that any defence correspondent for any publication, as Mark Nicol is for the Mail, can write that sentence and not consider that there is something ever so slightly wrong with it.

Out Of Trim 16th Feb 2015 12:52

This is really strange; I thought the P8 was for Anti-submarine patrol, not designed to protect airspace from Russian Bombers as well!

Maybe they intend to strap a whole load of anti aircraft missiles to the wings!

LowObservable 16th Feb 2015 13:26

The APY-10 has an air-to-air mode.

I suspect the Mail should have said "lease" rather than "borrow".

Don't be silly - the Russians don't have a vote in May.................

"And the cost sseem similar or higher than a P-8"

Japanese MOD press conference on P1 funding for SDF below.

P1 Cost around 95 million GBP each. (Fag packet sums- happy to be corrected)

Extra Press Conference by the Defense Minister Nakatani(02:43-02:50 P.M. January 11, 2015)
"
Minister:
I held a negotiation with the minister of finance a short while ago, in which he approved our plan to procure 20 P-1 fixed-wing patrol aircraft through a long-term contract. In addition, the finance minister also approved our plan to appropriate 350.4 billion yen for that purpose. We had requested that amount to deal with security issues in sea areas surrounding Japan including the southwestern region. This approval is extremely vital for us from the viewpoint of improving the Self-Defense Forces operations and strengthening Japan's defense capability. With the enhancement, we intend to firmly protect Japan's maritime security.

I appreciate that this link has been posted elsewhere on PPRuNe, however, there's some direct relevance to this thread re MPA/MMA.

US fears that Britain's defence cuts will diminish Army on world stage - Telegraph

For example, following the Coalition’s decision to scrap the RAF’s Nimrod maritime patrol aircraft, we no longer have the ability to track the activities of Russian nuclear attack submarines in the North Sea. A simple, cost-effective replacement would be to purchase the Boeing P8 Posiedon, with similar capabilities, which the RAF estimates would cost around £200 million a year – a reasonable investment, you might think, given the state of tensions between London and Moscow.

By coincidence, £200 million is exactly the same amount of money Britain donates to India in foreign aid each year. As a result of its generosity, Britain cannot afford the P8; India, on the other hand, has a fleet of the aircraft to protect its own territorial waters.
No agenda there then......

Biggus 2nd Mar 2015 14:44

£200 million a year in costs seems a bit light to me.

A and C 2nd Mar 2015 14:53

The cost seems light because we would be buying a proven system from Boeing, not letting BAe skin us alive to very slowly re-invent the wheel !

Which would probably be square anyway - and the procurement team would have doubtless forgotten to have included an axle in the specification!

Davef68. What do you suggest, then?

Davef68 2nd Mar 2015 17:21

Personally, I'd cut the overseas aid budget and order P-8s. But that isn't going to suit Cameron's social liberal sensibilites nor his desired legacy

Bit of a random post with little to no substance behind it... Want to clarify or just being pessimistic?

Jayand 19th Mar 2015 14:25

Sometimes you don't need substance. You could call it pessimistic or you could call it realistic?

That may come as news to a lot of people right now...
