Wellington T.XIX
 

Is there anybody out there who knows anything about the Wellington T Mk.XIX beyond the only statement that I can find that a few were converted from T Mk.Xs and eventually replaced by Valettas and Varsities? I have never been able to prove that any actually existed, let along find a unit that flew them.

I believe the Air Navigation School's used them, that would be Nos 1 and 2. It is possible that the Air Electronic school used them as our flt cdr on Vulcans, Auntie Mac, circa 1966, was trained on them.

Thanks for those thoughts, which is completely logical of course. I just need to find some evidence to be sure.

Watch 'The Dambusters'; the take off shot after Wallis' superb reply as to why he thinks he can have the use of a Wellington ("If you told them I designed it, would that help?") is a T.10, while I still remember the days before Hendon's Wimpey received its front turret.

Thanks, but I too have that book, and there is no evidence that NA851 was converted to a T.19. If you look closely you will see that the aircraft in the photograph is actually RP318 which was converted to a T.10 but never issued to a user unit.

Wikipedia (I know,.................) says the T XIX was a Service conversion of a T X, but no mention of what changes to one to make it the other.

Slight thread drift ...

Anyone got a clue on how the guys navigated on the Minesweeper Wimpy ... Compass next to useless I would have thought when the "ring" was energised and gaussing :eek:

Exactly, the aircraft's magnetic compass was no use when the ring was energised, so it only was when the aircraft had navigated to the area it had to sweep.
