I Want One!

I am impressed with this GPMG......and its lack of felt recoil or barrel climb!

The Germans do seem to have a talent for producing excellent infantry weapons, the WWII era MG34/42 being good examples...

Interesting...The GPMG replaced the Bren because they needed an area weapon and the Bren was simply too accurate. Now they want to replace the good old GPMG with this highly accurate version... Kind of like a Bren...

Ahhh... The circle of life... ;)

SASless 26th Aug 2013 01:53

Let a few Rounds whiz by yer ears.....too much accuracy is not a problem after that.

Decent bit of kit that.

I was once having some banter with a raf reg gunner saying I bet he's a rubbish shot. He replied as the GPMG gunner it's better that he's a rubbish shot, if he can hit them he's not doing his job properly as he's meant to spray the entire area to make the other side get their heads down.

I read they had to remake the Bren less accurate for suppressive fire. The German MG42 had such a huge rate of fire they couldn't hear the individual rounds, it sounded like a ripping noise and ended up with the nickname "Hitlers Bonesaw", the offical US Army tactic for attacking a MG42 was you cant do anything but sit tight and wait until ze Germans had to change the ammo belt or barrel.

magic piece of kit.

one fault you cant sight with your head down and the barrel above you.
it needs folded optics for that I guess.

I notice the owen gun heritage showing. the owen gun won support when it was shown to survive immersion in muddy water and still be able to fire.

Interesting comment.

The GPMG (M60 et al) has a good enough beaten zone "to spray the entire area to make the other side get their heads down" and if you want more, move the gun slightly.

The bit showing the need for a barrel change/cooling says it all. You'd need an extra man to carry the spare barrels. And another, with his 4 tonne truck, to carry the ammo. Not much access to convenient streams in the desert. "No. 2, hand me the spare gun while you dip this one in that puddle we came across 3 days ago." Impressive engineering, but so is a Mercedes and you don't use it as a main battle tank. It has its uses but I'm not sure it has a place in an 8 man infantry section. Adapt it for an aircraft maybe, with ram air cooling.......

No need to light the cooker for a cuppa, just cool a couple of barrels in fresh water and you've enough boiling water for at least a section to enjoy their char.

A clever engineering demo, but not a mainstream military weapon.

Which is what we were taught with the Bren. As for ammunition, each man in the platoon would carry 2x30 Bren mags - 60x2x30 rounds.

PN

I remember. Gun Stops, Cock Gun, Mag Off.......................

Nowadays the peeing bit gets more difficult.

Just why is it that everyone that handled the Bren came away with a great affection for the gun?

Was it really so good?

Is there anyone on PPRune that fired on in anger?

I suspect that the great majority of us only ever fired one on the range. I know I did, and I'm pleased about that.

I remember the story, 'If the enemy is within range, so are you!'

Fat blokes with machine guns hold much less attraction than Bikini Babes with Machine Guns....

Duncan D'Sorderlee 26th Aug 2013 16:12

SASless,

Can you get one in WalMart yet? ;)

Duncs:ok:

SASless 26th Aug 2013 17:20

Not in Walmart!

Now this here is real "Rock and Roll"!

The only way it could be better is those "Kini's" smelled of new leather.....then they would remind a fella of a brand new Pickup Truck!
