There is a documentary out there somewhere on this very subject. I remember watching it years ago, as it showed video footage of Argentine A4's flying low, on straight and level bomb runs (at San Carlos?) and all of a sudden the A4's cancel the bomb run in an unexpected climb or turn.

This leaked out at the time, and even appeared in one of the newspapers, probably the Telegraph.
After the war I can remember asking some of the chaps from Yeovilton about it and being met with amazement that I knew, and also being told to keep my mouth shut as it was "secret". Pity no-one told the papers.....
And the guys story was that the lazers WERE used on at least one occasion - against Skyhawks.
I can even remember a photo that was reputed to be the device - a kind of dalek shaped/sized housing with an optical panel in it. Whether that really was the device is another matter.....

Soviet subs in the Med often shone searchlights, and even sometimes fired flares, at Nimrods patrolling their anchorages at night. This was usually in response to the Nimrod bathing them in a few million candela, of course ...

BomberH/ex-Mudmover - There was a report in one of the books about the Falklands (It might have been the original Falklands:The Air war) that the first attempt at using LGBs involved the GR3s attempting designation and the Sea harriers carrying the bombs - was this correct or a bit of mis-reporting in the immediate aftermath?

I recall the spooks briefing us about the Kiev class carrier's weapon systems - and the strange looking device they'd noted which they termed Tin Man. They deduced that it was an active l.aser dazzling/blinding device :eek: ; however, it is now known to be a passive electro-optical tracking device which contains FLIR, LLTV and l.aser rangefinding systems.....:hmm:
