Airline recruitment
Just an FYI for you chaps pondering whether or not to take PAS with the unknown T&Cs and undefined pension terms... The North's favourite leisure airline has commenced non-type rated recruiting of FOs and captains. I suspect, as before there will be specific assessment days for ex or soon-to-be-ex military heroes.

Add these guys to the list of virgin and monarch I believe. Plus, I see new 787 and 380 fleet deliveries at BA.
Perfect storm for manning or another weak industry recovery? Dunno but with the pensions changes its going to take a LOT more than 80k to keep people in if the market is picking up... |
I wouldn't hold your breath for BA or for any substantial recruitment by Virgin and Monarch.
Funny world the airline business; I don't see any major threat to RAF manning coming any time soon but this latest round by Jet2 should provide a potential avenue for those seeking to exercise options or exit points. A good, profitable company that continues to expand while others contract... :) |
RAF Manning is already under threat, but from the inside! The current 'push' factors are probably more important than 'pull' factors. And anyway, in certain sectors the airlines are way,way down the list of potential outside jobs.

I'd agree. It was 98% "push" for me when I PVR'd 2 years ago. Only started properly considering my options once I'd pressed the button.
I'm also quite sure the airlines are indeed well down the list of options for some of those in the RAF (especially those that aren't pilots) however I do know quite a few people are looking to stay in aviation hence my sharing the link. Don't knock it until you try it! In fairness very few actual serving military pilots take much notice of this forum any more so this info might not actually reach that many interested parties. Son-in-law has already determined his exit date and he is not aircrew. The pension deal is the push. Daughter will not be long after.

If you are talking about the north being Leeds then I would think about casting your eyes a lot further north for better T & C's new aircraft and a great working atmosphere.

Good luck with that. Not interested in the usual "Terms and Endearment" bunfight. I'm sure those in the military who already have a 738 rating and are keen on a BCN base will have already applied :hmm:
For those who haven't managed to get a 733/8 rating whilst in the RAF I'd recommend my lot. Guessing you didn't enjoy your time there but the pay is decent enough, people friendly and I've certainly had absolutely no problems with the "atmosphere" here. I'll agree that compass testing is ridiculous tosh however a) we've hopefully seen the back of it and b) it's not actually difficult.... :rolleyes: |

As PN noted, the new pension deal is a clincher for many. It is financially 'less disadvantageous' to PVR before the new pension rules come into force - you lose less money by leaving now!

It still makes me chuckle that so many believe that RAF Manning's future depends upon the state of the airlines; that was a decade ago maybe, now I've never seen so many looking for any out possible and Manning are oblivious - on my fleet alone nearly twice as people will be leaving in the next 12 months than can physically be trained, and most of those are the experienced types too.
I'm committed but I'm pretty sure I only have 2 hands and that there will only ever be 365.25 days in a year...something has to be done, surely, before this becomes farsical?!? |

I said exactly that in the letter I submitted to my desk officer explaining why I turned down my PAS offer. It appears to me that future FRIs etc are being held back because some people believe a manning problem doesn't exist since the airlines aren't recruiting. In my particular little sphere of operations (FJ QFI world) guys are walking in their droves into well paid jobs outside of the Airlines. Unless I can be persuaded otherwise (I'm afraid I'm now shallow enough that it'll take money to keep me) I'll become a mercenary and go where the money's good. BV |

Only 2 days left until the deadline. I have no connection with the airline - but was hugely impressed with the friendly, thoroughly professional service I experienced on a recent trip with them. I see that, as a result of some recent LOC-I incidents and accidents, a company in the US is now offering 'upset and recovery training' using the TA-4 Skyhawk. Now that might be an interesting sideline for someone to develop in the UK, perhaps using the Hawk or (if there any airworthy examples available) the JP5? Not a difficult job for the right ex-RAF FJ instructor who doesn't want to be locked in a cupboard with a stranger for 2 hours at a time several times a day flying the Great Unwashed to inflict themselves on our long-suffering European neighbours! |
