Seems there is a time warp at RAF Cranwell

His Royal Highness (HRH) Prince Michael of Kent GCVO visited Royal Air Force College Cranwell on Thursday 29 June as the Reviewing Officer at the graduation of Initial Officer Training Course (IOTC) 31.

RAF Website

I was taught to pitch up at least 10 mins early ... but a week early :ugh:

So that'll be 2 Squadron then :ugh:

Not to worry as the Head of RAF eComms is a PPRuNer and will be along shortly to fix :ok:

I have to say that is a cringe worthy piece of editorial for which the author should be sent for some correctional wing walking....not only are factual details wrong but the use of the Queen's English is pathetic to put it mildly!

(Since when are we referred to as the Raf? and surely the good old Lime tree deserves a capital?!)

Poor, poor reflection on our once proud service!!:*

Where/when did Prince Michael qualify for RAF "wings"?

CoffmanStarter 24th Jun 2013 15:10

W00 ... Whilst in the Army at Sandhurst in the early 60's he learnt to fly at White Waltham. He was instructed by a a S/L Derek Homer. His first solo was in the summer of 62 on a Chipmunk. So I guess it must have been a truncated "Wings" course but I'm not sure what other fixed wing types he flew to qualify. Apparently he is also helicopter rated.

Wander00 24th Jun 2013 15:14

Well. one learns something everyday. Thank you. ISTR his brother was a keen and active pilot, but died in a flying accident.

CoffmanStarter 24th Jun 2013 15:39

His father, The Duke of Kent, died in an aviation accident in 1942 ... However it was Prince William of Gloucester, died in a flying accident in 1972.

Nice chap, had the honour of fitting him with AEA at Kensington palace prior to a trip to Benson. He's flown quite a few types, including Flanker. The palace cat took an intrest in the flying suits I'd bought along and plonked himself down on them. I gently forward assisted said cat off the suits with a highly polished toe cap when HRH took a phone call..:E

I see they've updated the date, but still haven't corrected the type (Tornado 11 GR4) or the squadron involved (11 (AC) Squadron). As an aside, if we are using squadron instead of sqn in this RAF article, shouldn't the squadron title be in full as well; in this case II (Army Cooperation) Squadron? One wonders who Ruth Vernon is and what training she has received for her role in editing articles like this?

Scroll down this list and she is listed as the Media and Comms Officer for RAFC Cranwell.

OldnDaft 25th Jun 2013 07:27

Yes she is - and she has been doing the job for quite some time......

Come on Cranwell ... we can all make mistakes ... but it's so important to get stuff like this RFT.

Motleycallsign 25th Jun 2013 07:57

Unless it is a ploy to get ISS employees to strike and picket ALL gates at Cranwell again.

Wander00 25th Jun 2013 09:35

I still have the photo in the Post 1 split horizontally by a comment caption - is that the posting or my cheap (fairly) laptop?

Thanks for the link, I had a quick look at it out of interest. Obviously attention to detail is no longer a pre-requisite for the RAF. In that list I noted (and only at a quick glance) a 'Flg Off' as opposed to the more traditional Fg Off; 'Cos Ops' vice COS Ops, 'Sraflo' vice SRAFLO, 'bbmf' vice BBMF, RAF Kinloss - didn't that close last year? Obviously 90%/80%/10% is good enough in meeja! :ugh:

muppetofthenorth 25th Jun 2013 10:14

Not that I'm trying to sell myself here, but there are more than a few young people, recently ex-RAF, who require no training in 'what things are and how they should be named' and would quite like a job in/around the Forces...

Or, is it a case of "they don't have a media studies degree, so therefore wouldn't know what they're doing"....?

4ROCK 25th Jun 2013 10:34

Where on earth is RAF Cottersmore????!!!:ugh:

A shocking reflection of the standards in the modern Royal Air Force. You'd have thought that the RAF website would be spot on and those involved in reporting on royal visits would be able to produce basic editorial faultlessly.

Mr Muppet I fear you may be on to a loser viz a job with this lot for two reasons, firstly you can spell and I also suspect you may be of the male persuasion....!

Fatjoff 25th Jun 2013 11:59

Oops!

Thanks for pointing out this list. I'm supposed to be on it for Menwith! I thought it had been quiet these past couple of months!

Roland Pulfrew 25th Jun 2013 12:50

Like Kinloss, closed! Drove up the A1 recently to see the sign in red now points to [Insert name of random dead general/ancient battle here] Barracks where the sign to Cott used to be :(
