Always remember a Fg Off (who later became an AVM) who when asked for his 1250, would always show it to the dog as he reckoned it was more intelligent than the handler!

Twenty years ago, back at Newton I did ask one of the Kennel Maids where the dogs came from. It seems many were donated by owners who couldn't handle them. The dogs were assessed for suitability but the deciding factor was often the state of the dogs hips. As working dogs the RAF would only accept dogs that had the best scores, some were re-homed, the remainder destroyed. The smell of singed fur coming from the dog crematorium wasn't pleasant.

I was at Kendrew Barracks (RAF Cottesmore) earlier this morning and watched UT army and RAF dogs being put through their paces. Lovely animals.

It may also be worth asking your local police force about one of their retired dogs.

I've got a former West Mids Springer Spaniel who was retired at the age of seven and who is by far and away the best dog I've ever owned! I know that West Midlands at least operate a scheme very similar to the one you describe, for the dogs that for one reason or another aren't suitable for police use.

Possibly another avenue to explore?

The only problem with the retired Police spaniels is they keep trying to bust your neighbours' kids and they bring you home strange packages.

I re-homed a German Shepherd who was no longer required due to illness. He had to have temperamental tests to see if he was OK with other dogs and people, I had to write a letter taking full responsibily for him from the MOD and also get insurance in case he bit someone. His first encounter with a jogger was funny as he looked at her arm as she ran past. 6 years down the line he shares his garden with 4 chickens, however he still acts like a police dog when the postman comes.

Does he still get nervous about certain noises?

Are there that many ugly wimmin in the RAFP?

Nothing bothers him, he's ok with fireworks, traffic, field full of sheep. maybe it's because he is a lazy git.

Seem to remember that in the fifties it was more expensive to buy a dog out of the RAF than an airman.

Station Commander of Thornaby inspects kennels, doggie well brushed and respectful, Station Commander waves swagger cane to make a point; doggie interprets this as hostile act, grabs Station Commander by the wrist.

Nope he acts like a dog when postman comes.......................all dogs do apart from the lazy ones.

Maybe its the fact the come to the house and then go away so dog assumes they a threat and by attacking he doing his job.

Saw a documentary on TV some time ago about Army dogs, got the impression that up to a certain point in their training dogs that fail to make the grade could be re homed but after a certain point, not identified, re homing was out and it was a compulsory needle, hope I'm wrong:(
