USA to approve V-22 sale to Israel

Ideal for the RN as a multi-purpose machine including air refuelling/AEW/SAR/Special ops and COD on the new flat-tops...

Also be a good machine for RAN on our new assault ships..

TBML ... Feel free to make your recommendation on suitability for the Royal Navy to this chap ... He'll almost certainly fire off a memo to the Secretary of State for Defence here in the UK. Make sure you use the phase "addressing Sea Blindness" ... Jobs a good'n :E

If you can include some statistical data so much the better ... Falklands Milk Production output data for 2011 would work just fine ... Just change the title and graph axis labels ... :E

Coffman, you are a git for tempting me to read that!

If I was a friend/relative of Cdr (retd) Ward I would actually be more than a little worried - he has clearly lost it.

I may be clearly biased in his ridiculous RAF bashing pieces but his F-18 v F-35 discussion, in which I have no bias or agenda, is actually quite hilarious after a while. His statistics, argument and world view are so distorted, ill-informed or just plain wrong that he loses absolutely all credibility. There probably is a good argument for F-18 rather than F-35 but after reading his argument the entire thing just looks ludicrous - he does far more harm than good for his "causes".

Given the new 1SL's view on inter-service bickering I would hope that he will fade away, but I suspect not.

Should he not be signing his myriad of letters as retired?

It always makes me laugh to see people putting down their ranks they held once upon a time in their correspondence, heck you even get Flight Lieutenants doing it these days...... They need to get over it.

Whatever prive they payed, it will be a whole lot less than our enormous procurement industry(sorry departments) could get it for.

Kluseau 20th Apr 2013 13:54

Trying to work out why, as it appears from that pic, they park them with the rotors in the vertical plane given that, self evidently, they have to move them to the horizontal plane before things get moving...

Just This Once... 20th Apr 2013 14:32

As pictured the engines are correctly orientated for access, maintenance, blanking and correct orientation of some seals.

Makes more sense when you see it all folded up below deck with the engines parked in the same orientation.

Do you think anyone could get an Osprey airborne without unfolding all that stuff???- kinda like the threads about F4s& others getting airborne without wing (un)fold?

Been a long time coming.......

AW&ST: http://aviationweek.com/awindefense/...-v-22-purchase

TEL AVIV—The Israeli Defense Ministry has issued a price and availability request to the U.S. Navy’s international programs office for the acquisition of the Boeing V-22 aircraft. This step in the long-delayed acquisition of the tiltrotor was finally taken after Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, chief of staff of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), decided that it has an operational need for 12 to 14 V-22s......

Actually Nutty, whatever one's views of his many assertions, he is quite correct to use the postnominal RN. It is an historical quirk that RN officers NEVER retire - they are placed on the Retired List and are theoretically available for service until the Grim Reaper comes knocking. This is a throwback to Elizabethan times, when "gentlemen officers" retired to their farms until the dastardly Iberians got uppity again.

Officers on the Retired List are also entitled to wear uniform on "suitable occasions". Not sure mine still fits though - I think it shrunk in the cupboard!

Are they any quieter than a Chinny though?

ok maybe 100kts faster (??) but still well baggable to light medium AAA.

Same for RAF and Army officers. This is why officers who retire on Armed Forces Pension Scheme '75 terms are not awarded a pension. This historical quirk leaves officers with the snappily titled 'Service Retired Rate Of Pay'.

Wee monkey. The V-22, according to Bell, cruises at 266kts, ie 100kts faster than a CH-47 is flat out, and can push up to 280kts. Speed helps with crossing rate at low level, but if you're a User you'll know it's only part of the story. The big difference re AAA/SA is that the V-22 can cruise comfortably over 20 000ft, and transition (at least up) through the threat band very quickly. As FL250 you're exploiting high level winds, your engines are pretty efficient, the drag is lower and you're above the MANPADS and all but the heavy calibre AAA. In a Fighter/RF threat you're not going to be up that high, but, where possible, it's a significant improvement over conventional 'blade edge on' rotorcraft. V-280 has already flown at 300kts….
