RAF NBC comms unit

Does anyone know where I can get one in working order?

Wander00 20th Mar 2013 12:41

Surely you don't mean the phone the size of 3 house bricks in a large suitcase, such as I had as an NBC Emergency Call out team leader in about 1990 (came as an add-on to being OC Handbrake House at W....n).

Whenurhappy 20th Mar 2013 15:23

Perhaps you should try Syria?

alexis_lambert 20th Mar 2013 15:57

Not sure of size, it's what the aircrew plug their helmets into.

Courtney Mil 20th Mar 2013 15:59

I think you're talking about the comms box used with the AR5.

I'll have a look in my attic.

former_herc_squip 20th Mar 2013 16:03

one of these?

Aircraft Parts Vickers VC-10 NBC Intercom Unit | eBay

or go and ask a friendly Squipper as we use them to test comms

CoffmanStarter 20th Mar 2013 17:52

I have to ask Alexis ... What's it for :8

NutLoose 20th Mar 2013 18:18

So Courtney you finally moved the AR5 set up out of the bedroom?

:p

alexis_lambert 20th Mar 2013 23:02

Testing that my helmets work :-)

alexis_lambert 20th Mar 2013 23:03

That's the thing, thanks

CoffmanStarter 21st Mar 2013 07:14

Whooooooooa, a HG test cabinet. Much smaller than the three VW Beetle size test rigs for the Typhoon (that do the same job..). Coat, Hat..etc.:E

I'll keep my eyes open for an NBC unit.:ok:

CoffmanStarter 21st Mar 2013 18:38

What was the smaller grey box that you could run a quick Bonedome test on ? I seem to remember one of the checks outside twiddling the knob to go through headset continuity ... there was a small shrouded contact spike that allowed the mic connecting plug and socket to undergo a screen test ... IIRC you touched the solder blob on the mic lead and it a green light ... if think ... a long time ago :ok:

Ancient Squipper 21st Mar 2013 21:17

Coff - Electicrial test set type 376 I first used one in 1959 at RAF Barkston Heath, it could be used as a stand alone item or it was fitted into the Godfery test cabinet.

CoffmanStarter 21st Mar 2013 21:24

Many thanks AS :ok: Best Coff ...

oldmansquipper 21st Mar 2013 23:53

Coff

Is that picture at Waddo? If so, when?

Ancient Squipper might just recognise the Cpl

Looks like the Sqn Badge is for 44(Rhodesia) Sqn at Waddo in 63/5 along with 101 & 50 Sqns

Fox3WheresMyBanana 22nd Mar 2013 00:33

Could be 27 Squadron - is that Jumbo green or grey?

or brown?

27 were at Scampton in the early 60's

My picture editor says grey, but that doesn't seem to clarify it.

CoffmanStarter 22nd Mar 2013 07:39

Morning Chaps ...

I believe the image comes from "No Claims Bonus" (1961), a short RAF film about the Nuclear Deterrent ... so that would make it 27 Squadron at Scampton (Green Jumbo). The original pic was posted by PPRuNer ZH875 back in Dec 2011.

Hell of a movie! If you listen to the sound during the scenes of the Vulcan in flight, I think you'll find they borrowed the engine noise from Thunderbirds.
