Contrary to some rumours, not a single mention of MPA...

Can someone with a degree in MoD BS tell me how much of the apparent increase in the budget is taken up the already committed PFI repayments?

very interesting - steady increase in subs and dramatic increase in Land equipment

Interesting to see how much of the budget is unallocated by 2017/2018...is that going to be put into the so called contingency fund?

The NATO report has a paragraph about MPA, like the NATO AWACS...

Maritime Patrol Aircraft: a multinational pool of maritime
patrol aircraft, available to all the participating countries,
and upon request to others as well, for a more flexible and
efficient use of available assets.

Wonder if UK money will be well spent there and would we ever put UK AWACS into the NATO pool at GK to save money...

MOD's £160bn 10 year equipment plan
 

£160bn over 10 years for subs, planes, tanks etc.

All while pensions, pay and allowances are slashed.

Wouldn't a tiny, tiny proportion of that money be better spent making servicemen feel valued and motivated again and hence more operationally effective? Or should we just buy hardware?

Making you feel valued won't cost that much. It's called Leadership.

If you do the math...giving every service person an extra £1000 per year would cost about 1% of the equipment budget.

You can have great kit, but if the person driving/flying/steering isn't at the top of their game due to low morale, you are wasting resources.

Not to mention, you get what you pay for, which is why we spend a fortune on training newbies when experienced people leave in droves.

Michael Portillo may not be everyone's favourite ex-defence secretary after selling off the families' quarters for a song, but his judgement on the equipment plan on This Week tonight was pretty sound... "it's full of rubbish, nuclear weapons that we will never ever use, and a carrier with no surface fleet to protect it and no aircraft". Interestingly Admiral Lord West (sat opposite him on the sofa) didn't appear to be too bothered by the latter comment!

I doubt if that will work at the checkout in Waitrose.

The Equipment Plan includes the following major investments in state of the art military capabilities and their support over the next ten years:

- £35.8bn on submarines and the deterrent, including a total of seven Astute Class attack submarines and developing a replacement for Vanguard Class ballistic missile submarines

- £18.5bn on combat air, including Lightning II and Typhoon fast jets and UAVs

- £17.4bn on ships, including Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers, six new Type 45 destroyers and the development of the Type 26 Global Combat Ship

- £13.9bn on aircraft for air-to-air refuelling, passenger and heavy lift, such as Voyager and A400M

- £12.3bn on armoured fighting vehicles, including Warrior, Scout and other land equipment

- £12.1bn on helicopters, including Chinook, Apache, Puma and Wildcat

- £11.4bn on weapons, for example, missiles, torpedoes and precision guided bombs

Much emphasis being put on the protection of funding to the equipment budget, no such assurances for the rest such as personnel. Looks as if we may well have a cupboard load of new goodies and nobody available to play with them. :ugh:

Bas'tard Sir, that "contingency" will surely be used up buying A400 tankers?

If you pay peanuts and treat people like dirt, you're hardly going to get the pick of the bunch, are you? The good ones will leave.

We demand more from servicemen but reward less. Why don't we use a tiny portion of this vast budget to invest in our people's morale and motivation. They machine is only as good as the person inside.
