50Kw HEL Anti Drone Weapon

Looks like the technology is reaching sufficient maturity to be a viable defence weapon against UAV's.

Rheinmetall HEL Technology

Following the recent test ...

Witnessed by leading experts, the demonstration delivered compelling evidence for the 50kW HEL weapon technology demonstrator’s high stability: a massive, 15mm-thick steel girder was cut through at a distance of 1,000 metres. The successful shooting down of several nose-diving target drones at a range of two kilometres formed the second major highlight. Though they were flying at over 50 metres a second, the Skyguard radar had no trouble detecting the incoming unmanned aerial vehicles at a distance of three kilometres. Then the 30kW weapon station used the Skyguard data to carry out rough tracking mechanically. The optical tracking system in the Beam Forming Units (BFU’s) in the individual leaser weapon modules performed fine tracking of the UAVs. After reaching the programmed fire sector the laser weapon modules engaged the UAV’s immediately and destroyed the incoming UAVs within a few seconds.

Just a few more steps I guess until the technology becomes truly viable against low flying strike aircraft ... :(

Low flying strike aircraft are probably not going to be around much longer.

Pontius Navigator 8th Jan 2013 13:16

Not at 50m/s.

Though 38 years ago, when we did a weapons course, laser damage mechanisms were . . . effective which would stop strike aircraft. Counters required gold film reactive visors with the more obvious solution to remove the pilot from the cockpit.

Only a matter of time before we have a high speed anti-laser missile system.

LO, did you mean no ejector seat or use an ejector seat?:}

Oooh PN you used a naughty word.

remove the pilot from the cockpit
Pish and nonsense!!

It was a good course, though.

ex-fast-jets 8th Jan 2013 15:05

:ooh:

Just as well Skyguard didn't have these things attached when they were being used by the height police in Germany!!!!

CoffmanStarter 8th Jan 2013 15:06

Totally agree Courtney ... you shouldn't take the Bloodware out the Aluminium ... yes some airborne jobs can use sophisticated automation to do the job ... but the bottom line remains that the Human CPU will always remain supreme at making fine judgement calls in tough/demanding situations :ok:

Prop-Ed 8th Jan 2013 17:26

I'm sure it isn't as effective as our 'anti drone weapon'. Designation: BEAGLE!:ok:

Courtney Mil 8th Jan 2013 17:51

A decent pair of Ray Bans. That's all you need.

AGS Man 9th Jan 2013 09:31

Looks very impressive but could it shoot down an ALARM or HARM cos thats what it's going to get if it uses Skygaurd as it's tracking system.

anti-laser missile system
Or an anti-l~ser l~ser. Of this, this could itself be countered by an anti-l~ser l~ser l~ser. I could go on...

Wot about making the underside of the UAV nice and shiny?

NutLoose 9th Jan 2013 11:37

All you have to do is armour the drone with NAAFI meat and potato pies, nothing can cut through them.

Could they not deflect it with mirrors or prisms?
