Question for those in the know.
Is the foam damaging to aircraft / engines ? Would these airframes / engines have been written off or just had to go through some vigorous checks before flying again ? . |
..but did anyone notice the lack of dust in the hangar?

Lateral thinking - open the hangar doors, crank the helos up et voila, no more foam!

Didn't the AAC do something similar to some of our Apaches recently?

Surprises me more than the foam is that the USAF still operates the UH1

The USAF still operates (62) 2-engined UH-1Ns for ConUS ops... they are devoted to ferrying operational crews (and Security Tactical Response Teams) to/from isolated MinutemanIII ICBM silos, to ferry VIPS around Washington DC, and to fly basic utility and search and rescue missions at a handful of sites around the globe.
They were planning to replace them with a new helo, but that got scrapped in the FY2012 budget, so they just got 3 from the USMC as attrition replacements and are overhauling them. As the USMC's UH-1Ys are new-builds, the USAF is now expecting to take on a "significant number" of ex-USMC Twin Hueys in order to expand their "service helicopter" fleet. The only non CONUS based UH-1N is at Yokota, off hand. Ramstein got rid of theirs UH-1N fleet post end of Cold War in the mid 90s....leaving the Andrews lot being the distinction of having the only gloss blue and gold cheat line VIP one. Any VIP hack in Europe for senior members of EUCOM be it navy , air force or army is left to a handful of VIP UH-60M either at Stuttgart or Chievres.
Last foam party I encountered was recently in a club and it ended up being more of a soap drama by the end of the evening :) Also did the MP's dog section were left foaming at the mouth at the end of that day? :ugh: Cheers |
Love the source website, it has extremely rare photos of officers in the Austrian Navy. The Austrians have done a great job of keeping their navy secret since the end of the Austro- Hungarian Empire. Until now that is! :E

AFFF is quite corrosive so a bath of this nature may have long term corrosion consequences as it does get to places that are hard to clean. A bit like operating at sea but naval aircraft often have better corrosion control on build. Other than some short term avionic issues the aircraft should be fine.
Still less damage than not have such a system and a fire breaking out! |
if they had kept the doors shut - like we always did......
nice cab cleans. at the end of the day - one big cleanup dick dance, far preferable to smoking hole in the ground where a hanger used to be. |
This reminds me at my school, when someone let the extinguisher go in the newly built and opened gym literally the day it was opened by the governors and parents. I think next day at assembly, the Head announced endless detention and possible suspension to the guilty parties :) :cool:

is this really foam extinguishers? or are they just cleaning and got carried away with the soap?
